I just got one of these monsters. Any of you who play an 8DD have reed/ligature suggestions? I am using the stock 2 screw ligature and have found that a Medium Fibracell works the best of the reeds I have tried (Bari soft, Rico Jazz Select 3S filed) I'm impatiently waiting for Vandoren to put out the ZZ for bari--love them on tenor!

I discovered last night that the piece feels better in my mouth with three thin mouthpiece patches. I have an older Lamberson tenor mouthpiece that is not as "duckbilled" as my newer tenor or the bari piece. Experimenting I found it more comfortable to stack 3 thin patches up to keep my mouth more open while playing.

The bottom end on the mouthpiece is wonderful! Effortless and loud.

Anyone have suggestions to get a good subtone with the piece; that's one thing I can't seem to do.

Try a Plasticover reed, these work best for me on the 8DD Bari mpc, a big thick sound with plenty of punch. These work exceptionally well on Conn Baritones.

I have found that the Francois Loius ligature (large tenor sax size ) really works great with both of my Lamberson bari pieces the M and the SB. Because I am one of Fred Lambersons dealers I have tried it on the 7DD and the 8DD and it works just as well on them. It seems to allow more Nuance and as to Sub-tone we all have different chops so all it takes is some long tone whispering and chromatic practice and it will happen.

Hey Brian,

Do you recommend the Francois Loius ligature over the Consoli Ramplig for the Lamberson 7sb bari piece?

Hi Mel,
On Bari I prefer the Francois Louis (best prices I found were with Theo Wanne mpce Heavan, mention me and he will give you a zero discount). On all my other horns I really dig the Consoli ligatures (I think Theo also has these, again my name is worth about a 0 discount but I guaranty he will not curse at you).
Regards,
Brian

Thanks Brian,

You are a fantastic resource for me out here in the sticks of Oregon:)

Try a Bonade lig. The tenor model fits the Baritone, it is a lot cheaper and plays better than the FL, Rovners, Standards that I have tried. It has even outplayed the Vandoren Optimum ligs I have compared it too on Bari. I have found this to be true on other horns too.

I finally got some Plasticover #3 reeds and Bootman is right. Those really sound great with the Lamberson. Unfortunately my first reed developed a 1/2" long split near the left edge after only about 20 minutes of playing

They also helped with subtone, although I find it difficult to subtone low notes on my bari--just the opposite from my tenor.

Glad it worked out for you. I was very surprised too when I discovered how well it worked. The other advantage of th ePlasticover is that they last a long, long time..........even with overuse!!

I have never seen a Lambertson mouthpiece, nor been able to find one for sale...what is the deal? Anyone know of pictures or description online and where one can purchase these? Are they more costly than Lawtons or other high end bari pieces??

Richard, I know you promote the 8DD, and I know you've also used RPCs. Have you ever compared an RPC .125 with an 8DD? Ron is, I think, a student of Lamberson, so there might be some similarity.

Not to sound disrespectful but as they say, "imitation is the sincerest form of flattery" yet it is still just imitation and not the original.

geo,
I have a Lamberson and an RPC here, they are quite different in how they play. They Lamberson is a much louder mpc than the RPC, both are great to play and each is better than the other in some ways. Overall, I prefer the Lamberson for the Conn and the RPC on the Martin Magna.

ps. The RPC is a 135, not a 125 with a medium baffle.
