Hi, just bought a big bell tenor, have the stock piece size 7 but want to try out different mouthpieces. I'll probably get 2, one with more deep and mellow tone, and another with more edge and bite. What mouthpieces do you big bell tenor owners favor and use and enjoy the most, model and size?

New Raven as of Sept 14. So far the Otto Links both HR and STM have worked better over a couple really nice High baffle pieces. Right now I'm trying out a Dukoff Fluted piece marked 4* but without a reface its really a .105 and it is one heck of a mouthpiece on this horn. There's a link to a comment by an engraver somewhere on SOTW refering to the Cannonball as being compatable with a large chamber. I'd aleast start there and see what works for you. A Dukoff Fluted Chamber can run you $250.00 at Saxquest and Mouthpieceheaven. If your inclined ask them what the real opening size really is.

My son played a Big Bell tenor for awhile...we recently sold it. What I remember mainly is that any mouthpiece I put on it worked...it was extremely friendly to mouthpieces. The sound and feel just didn't work for me.

I play a Couf 6*R mpc on it. I also have a Couf 4, CB 5 & 7, Selmer S80 C** and a couple others like Otto.

I prefer the Couf 6 mpc, it has a large chamber and mildly scooped sidewalls. It gives it a good dark & complex tone. The Couf 4 and Otto are next in line but both are easier players. I haven't measured but i think the Couf 6 is also a long table.

I tried Meyers 5mm, 6mm and 5LL but they seemed to have a generic, plain sound.

But the keywork is a tad bit awkward. But the earlier CB BB the thumbrest was too far to the left. They apparently moved it closer to the keywork so that i can fit smaller hands. It's better, but the RH table key posts are too tall which makes the table too high for my comfort.

I have good luck with the Cannonball Classic C*, which is available with the horn.

I also really like my two Morgans - a 3C and a 6EL. The 3C is just a little smoother than the CB Classic C*. The 6EL is amazingly flexible - the whole range of the horn really jumps out, and I think the 6EL could be used for anything from concert band to jazz to some classical.

Good luck with your search(es)!

If anybody's interested, I ended up trying a lot of tenor mouthpieces. The two that I liked the best (and bought) were a metal Runyon Quantum 8 and one of the new Jody Jazz hard ruber 6*. May not be your cup o' tea but definitely recommend trying them if searching for pieces that work well with the Cannonbell. As I'm getting used to the Jody Jazz I'm thinking maybe I should have got a 7, but the 6 works real well. Might buy a 7 some day. The Quantum gives more edge when I want it and the Jody is just a good versatile piece. Both blow super easy the full range and altissimo too, with great tone.

I have a Mad Meg Tenor and I use a Link NY 8 with either a java 3 or placticover 3. I also use a JodyJazz 8 with Rico Jazz select 3m. I like both of them but the link has a good firm easy to blow bottom end to it.
