Well, I finally got a chance to try a 34M myself. I've been looking for a modern horn to match my satin silver plated pre-Chu Conn for a while. I also have a Reference 54 that I normally play--another wonderful horn, but some days I long for a modern horn with that vintage Conn sound.

First of all the keywork was a little more compact than I was used to. Not a big thing, I knew I could get used to that aspect. It seemed very well made and would have been a very good horn for the money even if the sound sucked.

After going back and forth between my Conn and the 34M, I still liked my Conn better. The 34M came very close, but was lacking a little bit of power and had a slightly softer sound, not as raw and edgey as my Conn. The high ends were very similar, it's the low and mid range that had the slight difference. My guess is that it would match a 10M very closely, but having never played one, I wouldn't know. I also could believe that the laquer vs. plating thing might have been another difference in the sound.

The list price was about 2k, the actual price would have been about 2/3 of that or so. Although the horn was quite a steal at that price, I just couldn't justify it when I have a perfectly good horn already. (the ref 54 I mean) Maybe Conn's next tenor will be based on the Chu...

I am also interested in the 34M. Just wondering - how did the bore/taper/neck compare to the pre-Chu? and, are there any differences in the resonators (e.g. metal vs. plastic)?

My Conn has flat metal resonators (with 1 or two brown resonators left after the resoration.) I didn't look to see what kind of resonators the 34M had, but according to the Conn literature it has domed tone booster pads. (whatever that means) I did examine the neck briefly and they did look similar, but I couldn't say if they were exactly the same. I did notice that both had the exact same style neck brace. I didn't really pay attention to any of the other things you mention, so I can't really help you out there.

Thanks tommyboy I'm really curious to hear what a newer Conn would be like with metal resos. Seems like if you went back and forth netween the two though they must have been pretty close,

Does anyone know where to find/try these horns? They sound like exactly what I am looking for, but info is sparse - the Conn website shows only soprano - I would like to find a tenor. Thanks!

John,
I just went to my local UMI dealer and asked to see one. Within 2 weeks, they were able to get one from their UMI rep. I'm sure if you did a similar thing, you should be able to find someone who could get one for you.

I am a C.G. Conn (formerly UMI) dealer and am deliberating getting this horn as well as its alto counterpart (25M) in to try. My Conn rep has been bugging me for about a year but we have had a bad taste from the Conn saxes of the past 20 years that we have been hesitant.

I am probably going to get one of each for sample and if we do, I will let you know what my sax players think.

Anyone else played it yet? I am interested to hear what people think.

Any updates on this horn? 10M sound with modern keywork has caught my attention.

I played a 34M at NAMM in January for about 15 minutes and was very, very surprised with the quality and tone. For me, it isn't as great as the new Selmers, SG Unison or Keilworths but I really liked it... especially at the price.
