Maybe I'm just a fanatic, but I lov eto play all intruments, big, small, wind, string, or brass. I also love rock music and I actually use my bari in my rock band, but i'm thinking: what about the Irish bouzouki (not technically a bouzouki but called that, because it's not exactly and octave mandolin either. sort of a bastard child of the two). I mean, I know that the band Great Big Sea(www.greatbigsea.com) uses it on their most recent record, which is far more rock and roll than any other of their cds, so I'm kind of considering its possibilities.

any thoughts?

I like the sound of the Irish bouzouki, too. I like Irish trad music, play some tunes on the Boehm flute and whistle, and also play really lame mandolin. The bouzouki always has a nice open-string sound on those tunes, and I know a couple of courses are in octaves, the way they use it. It looks like with the length of the neck, it would be hard to play chords with all four strings stopped -- some mando chords would just be too long to reach.

I, too, love the sound of bouzouki. But everytime I see this thread title, I can't get the Monty Python 'Cheese Shop' skit out of my head  -sorry. I think you should go for it and post some clips here. Anything that expands musical horizons or blends differing genres is a winner in my book.
