Hey fellow SOTW peoples...
Has anyone tried the NY Phile Barone alto mouthpiece ? Im about to buy a new hard rubber mouthpiece to replace my Meyer 5 and I really wanna try this piece out.
This is gonna sound stupid but what is the big difference between a large chamber mouthpiece and medium and a small...Does it just make the sound darker and warmer ? My meyer 5m has a great sound its just to thin and you have to push it to get a loud sound..Its really irratating..I have a metal mouthpiece that is way more open that I love Its a Runyon Smooth bore...
Replies would nice

I'm using the Phil Barone alto mpc mainly now, it's a great mpc.. I don't know anything about mpc's chamber, but for the price, Phil's mpc is beautiful. Before, I played a Beechler Metal, Beechler Diamond InLay, Selmer C* Shortshank, Runyon, finally settle down with Phil's mpc... It's personal taste and experience, but I think his mpc is very quality.

1st chair , larger chambers verses medium /smaller chambers. Generally with the
same baffle and tip opening, the smaller the chamber the brighter and more focussed the tone . However when baffles come into play it's a different story. Freddy Gregory's pieces for example have large chambers but get their degrees of brightness and volume from the different baffles.
I have owned two Barone NY Alto pieces ,5M and 6M and thought them mediocre. A good version of the Meyer style piece is made by Fred Lamberson although they are much more expensive than Barone's. Fred also makes an SB (short baffle ) version which is great for lead alto. I play a 5M Lamberson which is the best Meyer style piece I've owned, I also came from a Meyer ( Babbit ) 5M. Fred's site is very informative about baffles, facings etc. Cheers

Does the piece access the altissimo register well ?

If you mean the Lamberson 5M , I've had no problem with altissimo.

Pretty easy altissimo with Phil's mpc that I'm playing now, although altissimo need the combination of player + mpc + reed + sax. I find that with the same mpc, some reeds will make it easier to play altissimo (especially Hahn synthetic reed).

I use a Barone NY6 with LaVoz MH and a Winslow lig and I am very happy. The sound is huge, but flexible.

Okay I just started playing alto again -- I am mainly a tenor - soprano guy but I learned on the alto in the 80's
I just got a 7M NY barone and I am a big fan of Joh Zorn, Kenny Garret and Dolphy on the alto. The sound is huge -- tenor like and you can bend, roar and let it rip like John Zorn. Mutliphonics -- subtone, altissimo, painissimo ala flute-- no problem. This is comparing to a Short shank E Selmer, a Morgan and a refaced by JVW Meyer that my friend owns. I am happy to get it. I was thinking that 7M would not be open enough but this piece is. I don't know about Fred Lamberson but if it compared better to the other 3 mouthpieces above I am sold on Barone. My reed is just a 2.5 Vandoren that I got from Hastings bookstore. I am hoping it will sound even better with Superials that I ordered and some old brown box ricos that I got from ebay. My horn is a B&S alto made in the 70's and has metal resonators on the pads. Just got it also and has been adjusted and leak free. BTW -- I really enjopy playing alto again
