Has anyone had their tonsils removed as an adult? If so, how did it impact your playing? I'm thinking of getting mine removed, but I'm worried about any negative impact.
Anyone?

I had mine removed at th age of 34 (VERY painful), and the doctor also removed part of my elongated soft palate at the same time. I wasn't very active playing at the time, but as I've picked the horns back up, I have noticed some differences. It is hard to explain, but my personal "resistance" has changed. It's sort of like a reduction in back pressure. I'm about to adjust to the change in my oral cavity, and it should actually help, since the surgery serves to enlarge the space.
Whatever the consequences, if you have a doctor who suggests that they be removed, then do it. I put it off for 20 years, and the infection that is harbored by the tonsils is a health risk.

I'm 28, and I'm going to ask my Dr. about having them removed. Years ago (teenager) I had my doctor tell me that he was going to remove them if I got 1 more throat infection. However, lazyness on my part and moving away to college put a crimp in that plan. Now that I'm starting to have troubles again, the idea of removal popped back in my head.
Um...just how painful are you talking about?

Dont worry about it, I bet alot of sax players got their tonsils removed before even learning the sax.I've never played the Sax with tonsils, And although it might me an adjustment for you, Im sure after getting used to it, it'll become secong nature.

Don't worry, Andres, it's not too too painful.
Just ask for lots of codeine... and expect a couple pounds of weight loss, since all you'll be consuming is ginger ale...

Greetings Andres,
Having your tonsils removed is painless. It's the moment you wake up and the anaesthetics have worked out that the PAIN begins.
But don't worry. Ask for lots of painkillers.
As playing the sax is concerned, I find that my tine has improved. It could be just a mental thing, but it actually does change your oral cavity so it could have an impact.
Maybe my tone would also have improved without them being removed?
I cannot find any drawbacks on my playing, on the contrary...

Auutsch! I still remember the pain when I had mine removed at the age of 35. I was 1 week in hospital and 2 weeks at home. But it was worth it. Since then I never had a severe infection again. And never had to put off a gig because of it. My sax playing didnīt change at all. Absolutly no difference. Good luck!
