A few days ago I had the possibility to test a Reference 54 Tenor, but only for 10 minutes. I used a Link toneedge 6* and RJS reeds.
Normally I play Alto (Keilwerth SX90R, nickel, goldlacquered) and I was deeply impressed. A very dark and smooth sound (I think phantastic for Blues and older Jazz), good intonation (except the palm keys which were a little sharp, but possible to handle) and easy attack. Very easy to play piano, my alto is harder to play piano with a good sound.
I am very interested in buying one.
Now I have several questions:
The sound was dark and smooth. Is it possible to make the 54 tenor scream e.g. for rock and roll?
Is the 54 a very variable horn for different styles of music (normally I don't play classical music, so this is not my focus).
Do other 54 have the same good intonation?
What mouthpieces do you use?
Please help me, I am infected with the tenor virus!!!!!!!

Thank you.
Markus

The Ref54 is a great horn, with great intonation. I would recommend getting a different neck though eventually. The ref54 neck has a great amount of curve to it compared to others. It sits very low compared to others. I have noticed this to make it a slightly stuffy. A series III neck seems to really open these horns up. They play very evenly from top to bottom, which is great. I consider them one of the best modern horns, and one of the best horns regardless of age.

Thank you Marc, I bought one 4 weeks ago and I am very happy with it.
Why do you want to sell it, any problems?

Markus

Hi Markus,
It's already gone on ebay.
In fact, I liked my ref54 ... until I tried a Dave Guardala ;-)
