How about Ted NASH?? The old one who played with Les Brown in the 40s and got in the Hollywood studios after that. He had in my opinion one of the most beautiful tenor sounds ever. Beside that, when you listen to his 1946 LEAP FROG solo you think a clarinet is playing high. This kind of playing is far away from modern high note playing and it is one of the secrets I think I will never get into. JUST GREAT!! Pure amazing lines......

Glad to see Ted's name here. I was listening to an old Paul Weston LP, Mood for Twelve, featuring him on tenor recently. At the time I was performing with Toni Tenielle (I hope I spelled that correctly). Toni's musical director was a former Les Brown lead alto player, and he sent me Ted Nash's address. When I wrote Ted a letter telling him how much I enjoyed his playing, I got a really nice reply.

The Mood for Twelve LP and another Weston LP, Solo Mood, were both re-released on a CD, entitled Easy Jazz, by Paul Weston. Two selections are by Ted Nash, one on Tenor (Skylark) and one on alto (You are too Beautiful). The CD says Skylark is on alto, but it's on tenor. Ted told me so himself - That's why I wrote to him! The guy writing the liner notes was fooled by Ted's altissimo. To be honest, I can't remember how I got it, but try a Google or Yahoo search to see if there is a Paul Weston website.

The first time I heard Ted play was on a transparent red vinyl LP. I was a big-band rip-off Peter Gunn Sound track put out by Crown Record, (which I still have).

I many ways it was superior to the original Shelly Mann, primarily due to Ted Nash's soloing. If you can lay your hand on this recording you'll be treated to some fine sax playing.

I had read some where that his son is in the business. Do you know if that is true?

Yeah! His son is a great tenor player himself. He was a child prodigy, didn't go to college, just straight to New York. Now he is in the Jazz@LincolnCenter Jazz band in New York led by Wynton. He also leads is small group with Marcus Printup, they do some crazy stuff. Check them out.

I guess the younger one is in The Herbie Nichols Project? I didn't realize there were two.

The older Ted Nash recorded quite a bit with Henry Mancini in the 50's and 60"s
and wrote a books, still in print I believe, "High Harmonics" or something like that.

Young Ted Nash is the son of Dick Nash (trombonist and brother of old Ted Nash).

Old Ted has played w/ Les Brown, Billy May and Henry Mancini (and a zillion others), he played alto on the Peter Gunn theme.

Younger Ted now plays with Wynton & the LCJO.
