excellent quesiton. i've wondered the same thing. I don't like the look now so it probably can only get worse..

It will probably look satin silver plated with lots of fancy engraving done by Sherry Huntley or Jason Dumars (at least mine will!).

The high F# rod on my 54 has already lost its lacquer, but you have to really look to notice, it blends right in with the rest of the horn. I think Morry's right, its gonna look like it looks now.

Randall....your email isn't listed on the board. I think I had it before, but my PC crashed a few weeks ago. Email me from the icon below.

yea i think ur right Im looking at the unlacquerd Z and it looks like the 54 sorta, so anything that comes off will in time come to look like the rest of the horn.

It will look what it does now plus some greenish-redish spit mark, some scum inside..etc.

Hopefully not like the cheap, Home Depot antiqued brass door knob they look like now (if it weren't for the antiquing, I'd say they looked great).

It will look like a 20 year old kitchen cabinet handle.

I saw a bare brass hand polished Mark VI a few weeks ago and I thought it was a Ref 54. I agree with Morry that the Ref 54 will pretty much look like it does now.

If what you mean is with wear and tear over the years causing some of the matte to wear away then it will simply look like every other horn out there with wear! It will have some parts with no laquer and some with. Think of a Mark VI or maybe an SBA, there are spots with no laquer and spots where some laquer still remain. The 54 will be exactly like this except where there is laquer on the VI or SBA there will be the gold matte on the 54.
I had the orignal neck to my 54 repaired awhile back and when I had it done I also had the neck de-laquered. The gold matte (cant quite remember what it is now but I was informed by Selmer when I got the horn that the matte is a mix of gold and something else (maybe bronze or maybe its just gold)) and is not just a paint to make it look old like many people think. Anyway it melts off pretty easy and evenly. All thats under there is pure Bell Brass (higher copper content), and when de-laquered it looks like any other bare brass item.

Theres your answer! :D
