View Full Version : Tone after warmup

Everyday, I go through a pretty extensive warmup that takes about an hour, to two hours normally. But a personal observation that I made is that my tone is always 100% better after I practice my harmonic excercises. I work out of the Sinta book. But I'll start off with long tones, and think that my tone isn't great, and even after scales, and all that other stuff, but then, when I practice my overtones/altissimo at the end of my warmup, my tone is so much better. Any clues as to why?

Well David A., I can only say that I experience the same thing!!!
As to "why" I can't really say. I suppose the overtones and the altissimo let you work hard to achieve the correct tone. Playing those, puts you in a very conscious state of mind, whereas playing the regular notes it's more of a subconscious thing.
When you're in this more conscious state, switching to the normal register let's you play the regular notes more with more awareness...
Am I making any sense here?

I agree with SoulMate. However, you can get your sound in shape faster if you start practicing with the same "overtone" attitude. At least works for me.

Yeah, it makes sense. My theory is that when I work on overtones, I put my oral cavity in exaggerated positions, and so when I come back to regular registers, I'm able to manipulate my oral cavity easier, and with more flexibility to create the tone that I want. Just my theory though.
