I've got a C-Melody Runyon that plays way too sharp on a Conn straight-neck C-Melody - even when the micro tuner is run all the way out. Is this common?

Oldair,
Have you found a mp that works for your C melody.
I'm currently restoring a conn straight-neck C, so I will be searching for a mp soon. The Runyon C melody MP worked great for me on a Martin C melody that I recently sold (along with the runyon). I've never dealt with a microtuner before so I'm very interested which mp's others use on Conn C saxes.
thanks,
Les

I'd heard the Runyon was in tune on the straight-necks. I'll be getting mine out of the shop in the next couple of days, will check it as I have a Runyon for it. The horn hasn't been playable for years, will be interesting to see.
I also have a Morgan ordered for it, so I'll be able to check them against each other, will post here when I'm able.

Mark,
I look forward to reading your evaluation.
FYI: Cybersax recommends selmer short-shank jazz mps for straight-neck conns. http://www.cybersax.com/QA/Q&A_C-Melody_Mouthpieces.html
I haven't seen too many of these mps on Ebay and I bet they are $$y. I can't wait to test out my alto and tenor mps on the Conn C. However, none of them were feasible on the Martin C that I had.

Do they play in tune on Buescher trutones?

There are some great comments about C mouthpiece designs and options in the C Melody or C Melody Mouthpiece sections here on the Forum. See also the detailed discussion of Morgan and other C Mel mouthpieces on the C Melody Forum:

I know this is the Runyon section. However, I just picked up a vintage Goldbeck C Melody mpc -- large chamber, very dark, requires hard reeds -- which suits me well on my straight-neck Wonder. Played against a tuner it plays well in tune -- or at least as well as permitted by the player and the horn.
BTW, my horn came with a virtually new Goldentone 3 tenor mouthpiece that plays almost as well in tune as the C mpc, believe it or not. From everything I have read, "Your results may differ!"
