:?:
I have ordered a Runyon Custom Spoiler for my tenor. I have never dealt with a spoiler before, so I'm wondering: How does the spoiler attach inside the mouthpiece? I have researched the Runyon site, but I can't find any info.
Also, how is the stock ligature? It seems most people use something other than the stock unit, so does that mean the stock lig is no good? What should I expect the stock one to sound like, and what are the advantages to using another ligature?

Congrats Teach,
That is a good all around performing mouthpiece. To answer your questions: 1)The main attaching surface of the spoiler is plastic and is contoured to fit the upper chamber of the mouthpiece, with the metal reed suspended in the throat. You would really have to force it to fit any other way. After you get it if you can not figure it out then ask again, I doubt you will have trouble. 2) The stock ligiture is made of nylon (plastic) and feels very cheap compaired to a metal lig. It also takes some practice to get the hang of mounting the reed. This said, I like the stock ligs because when tightened they fit the odd shape of the mouthpiece very well and can be tightened very securely or loosely to suit your needs. I find trimmed reeds work best. This allows you align the back of the lig (part closest to you mouth) with the trim line on the reed. Also do not mount the lig upside down, as it works best with the screw above the reed surface. Enjoy!!

Been working with the Custom and getting used to it. I have a Custom for my alto, but it's a 3 (i think...it's hard to read the number), so I had to get used to the 8 opening on my tenor piece.
The sound on my Yamaha 61 tenor with the Runyon is HUGE! It is very controllable as well. Here is a little story....
I play drums with a variety group. The sax player and I switch instruments so I can come out front and sing/play sax. I usually play my alto, but I brought my tenor out last weekend. I got in front of the microphone (as usual) with my sax, and when we started the song, the whole band went "Whoaaaa" as the sound of my tenor blasted through the PA system. The band commented that they liked the sound of my sax.
I'm not so sure about that stock ligature though.....it seems like the screws are crooked across the reed, and even though I don't crank the screws down really tight, the back screw is in as far as it can go, and the front screw is just about there as well. I may have to try a different lig...

Hey,
Just got a Custom 10 with spoiler on my super20 Bari. I first used the plastic lig and it sounded fairly well with a medium fibracell reed. I then tried my tenor Francois Louis Lig (lacquer) and it fits very well. It also gives the sound a lot more edge and brightness. If you're interested, I recommand you go to a dealer to find the lig that fits best. The Francois Louis sizes may be a little tricky to figure out (I used a tenor lig on my rubber berg for alto...and it fits the custom for baritone).
