Can you hint me in the right direction for some Large Chamber Tenor saxophone mouthpieces, I don't care what material.

Try a NY Link (metal) or a HR Link - both are really good Large-chamber pieces.

I second the Morgan EL. Best large chamber I ever played!

Are there any Vandoren Large chamber pieces?

forget about the vandoren.

Go with the link or the morgan. Both are the best you'll find. I understand that selmer is now making the "soloist" model. Try it - they were great mouthpieces.

Lamberson makes a large chamber piece, haven't tried it myself though.

The hard rubber Bamber mouthpieces from WW&BW have the largest square chambers I've seen, and play very well.

Try an SR Tech Legend (metal). Much better quality than modern Links.

I'm running a J8 (.120") on my Borgani and it is wonderful! I was especially surprised at how easy it is to play as well as how well it responds. (RJS 3S unfiled reeds w/ Francois Louie lig) :borg:

Hi Woodwindmaster,
I am currently playing a Barone Jazz 8.
There is a highly detailed description a few threads down.
The tonal spectrum on that piece is still pleasantly suprising me.
It's on the dark side, but with very rich overtones.

Vandoren Jumbo Java T97 hard rubber. Forget the metal mouthpieces. Joe.

What about T95 Jumbo Java?

I don't think anyone would consider chamber on the Jumbo Javas to be large.

Dr. G, I'm considering a Lamberson since I just got a soprano piece from him. Fred made me a 80 opening that I'm still checking out, so far I like it.
Is the J8 in the ballpark of a good Link? My current tenor piece is a tweaked HR Link, 115.

Mitch,I just tried a J6 and J7 ,I use a 7* HR Link(it's a good one). The Lambersons are brighter and louder. They aren't overly bright but I like dark and stuck to my Link. The Lamberson's are very nice and worth a try. It sort of depends on your taste in tone but I feel they are brighter than a HR Link.

Mitch ,one more thing is the opening of the J6 felt more like the 7* Link. Even a J7 would be like the feel of your .115

I'm getting a J8 from Fred this week to check out, I'll post my experience after I play it for a few days.

Mike C.: What's an "HR" Link - I know NY, Florida but this term is new to me. Thanks.

The J8 does not work for me. Too bright and resistant, odd combination. My Link is still it for me. I do like his soprano piece so far though.

Too bright? I could understand "resistant" - it's a very large chamber with no baffle and a big tip opening, but too bright?

What reeds were you using? What horn are you playing?

I'm sorry to hear that it didn't work for you. Did you talk to Fred about your results and what you wanted from a m'piece? You could darken down considerably by going with a smaller tip opening and stiffer reed. That would probably put the mouthpiece in better balance for you regarding resistance as well. His J8 is a .120" - maybe the J7 would be closer to your liking.

Yes, it is too bright.
I like the bigger opening, I've been playing on 115-125 pieces for the past 15 years, some dark some bright.

Fred and I are talking via email and have been.

I'm interested to learn your outcome. I, too, tend to play to the bright side of a mouthpiece but have been having great success with the J8. My other fav is a Morgan "L" reworked by Jon Van Wie to .110".

Last night I was too lazy to switch out my setups and played my Morgan "C" .095 (Vandoren 3, Francois Louis lig, Ref 36) with the big band. Plenty dark (it is my classical setup) but still sufficient projection and flexibility to perform in a 20-piece ensemble.

G'luck with the quest. Please let us know what works for you. It sounds like you are yet another on a similar path to Tone.
