How does a Gemeinhart M3 flute compare to the current intermediate yamaha flutes that have the silver headjoints? I have had my eye on an intermediate yamaha flute (300 series) but came across a cheaper used Gemeinhart M3 recently.

The Yamaha willprobably have better mechanics but the Germeinhardt will probably have a better sound. In the end, all you can really do is play both for yourself and then decide.

The Yamahas here Down Under form Japan seem a lot better than from an inferior (from the impression I get from forums) product marketed in USA. So any comment from here is not very valid. Very few people here buy Gemeinhardts now. For student flutes it is Yamaha & Pearl.

I own one of each and I prefer the Yamaha (381) by far. The Gemeinhardt is 10 years older, which may have something to do with it, but I find the Yamaha much easier to play. The tone, flexibility, dynamic range, and intonation are all better on it. I use the Gemeinhardt while I'm teaching, but my practising and gigs are all done on the Yamaha.
