I bought an alto that came in a selmer flight case with locks on it. Unfortunately, the former owner lost the keys. Is there a way to replace them? I would like to be able to lock my case on occasion. Thanks in advance for any advice.

They sent me three keys with my case...I don't know if they'd fit, but I'd be happy to send you one to try...

if only I can find where I put them

the first thing one should do when they get a new case is throw the keys away. if someone wants to get in they'll just wreck the case to do so-and have you ever gotten to a gig,the case is locked and then you have to get the drummer to chew it open-either way don't lock your case-throw the keys in the trash-looks like the former owner was sharp enough to figure it out.

MusicMan, that would be great. Maybe I could send you a little something in exchange.

Thomas, the reason I want to lock my case is not to prevent theft, but to make sure that the case stays closed when traveling. The clasps come open easily and if I could see it coming opened and the horn falling out among other luggage or whatever. If you have an idea to avoid this besides locking the clasps (which are easy to pick, btw), let me know.

one of the major problems,I think, with most cases is that there's a handle on only one side of the case as is so with your selmer case. My suggestion is to install another handle opposite to the existing one which you can tie together so that even if the latches fail the case won't open. Another fix if you don't mind the look is to epoxy a strip of industrial strength velcro on either side of the case making a strap over the joint.

Take the case to a locksmith. He will make a key to fit at a reasonable price especially if you get an estimate of the cost before he starts work. The shop should have a standard price list for this service. These locks are not intended to thwart serious thieves, just your average curious child.
I have no training as a locksmith and have made keys for various trunks and suitcases. A professional locksmith will do it in a very short time period.
I once had a key made for my Triumph. I took in the lock cylinder and the smith had a new key in about 5 minutes without disassembling it.
