:D Checked him out with Bela Fleck the other nite-Bob Mintzer just happened to come by and join them at SUNY Purchase. The guy is great, also experiments with various effects and it's nice to see someone pick up a tenor and an alto and play them at the same time!Way to go Jeff!

Another amazing player that lives in Nashville that I have to compete with for work. Luckily, he is on the road most of the time with Bela.

Extremely talented -- check him out.

Man, I got the Bela Flick Live album last week and have played it I don't know how many times since then, at home and in the car. He just burns. He must be half my age but he's my new hero. This guy's just killin'!!!!!

This thread needs new life :)

I've been a Bela Fleck and the Flecktones fan since the Flight of the Cosmic Hippo days before Jeff Coffin joined up. When I first heard him in the band I knew the guy was good. To be honest, I didn't really know how good up until I met him at a clinic yesterday. I guess I can never get enough of listening to Victor Wooten when I hear the 'tones. It's the bass player in me.

Not anymore! Jeff is a master player with unbelivable skills. And, he's a great guy to meet and talk to.

It's great to know there are players of his caliber out there stretching the borders of what's possible on the sax.

I wrote a few notes about the clinic here. (http://www.saxontheweb.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=44208)

He's got a few more dates coming so you will want to check him out.

The entire band is pretty amazing. When they were touring for the Perpetual Motion album the group did what was really a complete show and then Bela came out and did the classical stuff solo at the end. His mechanical dexterity is downright freak.
BTW TJ, I got tickets for the Zappa show in Canton on 10/22. I'm psyched.

If Zappa was still around when Coffin was getting known, I'll bet he'd would have wanted to get him to play in his band. He always had a great ear for new talent.

Enjoy the show. I'm sure you will ;)

BTW, if you get BETJ you can catch Jeff Coffin and and the Wooten bothers on there a lot. They do a show called "STUDIO JAMS" -- Tivo it.

As it happened, he did a project with Vinnie Colliuta, but I'm not sure what the status is. I got to hear some of it and it was cool as hell (in spite of my purist ways).

My wife and I and 2 daughters met Jeff Coffin before the show in Lancaster. He was hanging out w/ his Dad at the back of the theatre. He was one of the nicest gentleman I had ever met. NO big head w/ Jeff. He took a genuine interest in my girls' sax playing and even introduced us to his Dad.

BTW Jeff Coffin was SMOKIN last nite. The way he bended notes on his soprano was amazing!!!!!!One of his alto solos was one of the hottest alto solos I have ever heard. Rest of the flechtones weren't too shabby either!!!!They rocked!!!!!

He also played flute and clarinet. Real nice clarinet;it looked like it was made of rosewood.

Watch out if you're talking about the Studio Jams with the guys you mentioned plus Joey DeFrancesco on the Hammond B3... Wow! I wound up buying all this Bela Fleck stuff, plus Joey D stuff, and that permutated into buying Joey D with Huston Person, and then Joey D and Houston backing Janis Siegel's solo album... it started running into some real money. Great music though. I particularly liked the Studio Jams with the Bela Fleck crew doing a jam version of Stevie Wonder's "I Wish". I'm trying to recall if Larry Carlton was on that one too.
