I recently acquired a gold-plated Phil Barone metal "Standard" tenor sax mpc. with a 7* tip opening. It is a fairly bright piece, but has a full sound and great projection when pushed on my Mrk VI. I can't seem, however, to find any information about this model of Barone. There is nothing on Phil's sight and I can't find it listed in te WW & BW catalogue. I actually like this piece more than my Barone Hollywood, which I thought I would never replace. Any info. on the "Standard" is appreciated.

Why not simply email Phil? He is usually very helpful when contacted.

Yup, Phil is generally very helpful. But according to his description of the Standard model from his ebay auctions: the Standard is patterned on the early Bergs, "but without the drawbacks".

I recently got a Standard 8 for tenor, and I can pretty much agree, it's like a bright long table duckbill. I still haven't decided, though, if I still prefer the "drawbacks" of the old Bergs. The baffle/chamber profile is very different, and it really seems to like to take air in it's own way.

Any other comments on these from those who've tried them so far would be very interesting to hear.

JonL, can you elaborate on how the Barone likes to take air in its own way? I haven't played a Berg on tenor for a long time, but the drawbacks I remember are ponr response to articulation and difficulty getting the low end of the horn to speak.

MM, I guess it's hard to describe, but I'll do my best. The Standard, similar to a lot of Phil's mouthpieces, seem to blow very freely, but with a resistance that still lets you pretty much whisper through it when you want to. It has a lot of baffle, but it rolls off very quickly into a pretty open chamber, with a vague suggestion of the bullet design. I hope this isn't too vague.

I do know what you mean about Bergs, though, and I say this as a fairly well dyed-in-the-wool Berg guy. Bergs are just inconsistent, no matter what the vintage.

I thought Phil's "Standard" had a spread sound to it. If you like it, you think it is complex and rich. If you dont, it lacks focus and projection.

Maybe that's the piece I got from Phil on Ebay and then sold to a feiend on SOTW. It's a Berg-like piece, very easy to play but very very bright (for me).
