How is the OEM mouthpiece. I am more then likely going to purchase a new mouthpiece after I receive the sax but it comes with this mouthpiece. Is it any good.

Brian: There are probably lots of players who love their stock Yana mouthpieces, just as there are many players who don't. If it plays for you, then it is good. DAVE

Brian,

To supplement Dave's assessment, I can chime in that the Yani mouthpieces are some of the most well made mouthpieces on the market. They are very cleanly made and play very good.

Whether it works for you or not, who knows. But the mouthpiece is a good one nonetheless.

Alright.. can someone give me the equivalent facing to say a Selmer S80 or something? I have been playing the S80 C* and wanted to know how it would compare in terms of size and tone quality.

Here are the 2 links to each company's facing charts:

Yanagisawa

Selmer France

The Yani 5 is equivalent in tip opening to a C* (1.7mm)

And which one comes stock with the Yana Sax.

Typically, the 5 HR (which is why I gave you it to compare to a Selmer C*)

Good -- so I could already love the feel of my sax when I get it. If I wanted the sound to be more jazzy, would I have to move up in number or down in numbers (same with letters). My main music will be Jazz, not classical so I don't require two mouthpieces yet.

I don't know about the Alto pieces, but a Yana 5HR for soprano has less edge than my Selmer S-80 D. Welll made indeed and it may serve you well until you try some others. For some reason, I have always thought that the stock mouthpieces always work well on the horn that they come with. Maybe the bores are matched better or maybe I am crazy, probably both.

So it plays very well with medium hard La Voz reeds.
