After three or four cycles of respiratory illness over the past eight months, each of which seemed to coincide with prior heavy playing on my moldy reeds, I made the logical, or perhaps illogical, leap to blame my moldy reeds in their Reedmate II case. I had previously blamed my children of 4 and 2 years age for harboring nasty germs :borg: and passing them on to me.

So I proceeded to soak my reeds in a skin disinfectant, as I had no hydrogen peroxide or alcohol on hand. Then I boiled my reed case in water. Unfortunately, or perhaps fortunately, the reed case warped so badly I can no longer use it. So tomorrow I'll pay the exorbitant amount of money demanded for a Selmer case  and hope my mold and illness problems go away.

Incidentally, my wife is a medical doctor with an epidemiology background and she tells me she would need to look into some microbiology details before she could give me her opinion as to whether the blame I am placing on the mold and reedcase is justified. But I swear there is a correlation.

In any case, be careful boiling your reed case . . . or you just may . . . end up with those . . . ol' reed case blues 8)

I'm happy with my Selmer cases, but I still get the occasional moldy reed, and after a couple of years' use, that fabric top is looking kinda "iffy" in terms of cleanliness...

Have you checked out any of the reed pads from www.doctorsprod.com? Look under accessories. I recently tried the Doctor's Thirsty Reed Pad and am pretty happy with it. I would email him before ordering however. I would have probably ordered the lite version if I had talked to him about my needs first, but he is extremely helpful.

Good luck.
