can someone tell me about my mouthpiece? I have an alto guardala mouthpiece that is 24k gold from probably the mid 80s. the serial number is 'sa 73g'. I bought it from a guy who visited guardala's garage around the time he was finishing up the first michael brecker model- he bought this mouthpiece at this time. Is this thing worth anything? I would love to sell it. does anyone know ANYTHING about this vintage piece?

It's not worth a dime. But I'll take it off your hands. I'll even pay shipping! :D

It's probably one of the first Guardala Studio Alto he made. The tip opening of 0.73 looks small to me. I used to own a Studio Alto I bought directly from him in '86 or '87. If I remember right, there were also his initials "DG" somewhere on the piece.

73 is a running serial number, has nothing to do with the tip opening. The opening is propably close to 0.85 .

Actually Toni-
The mouthpiece has a huge hole, it is very hard to keep in tune. But if you are a real pro, it probably is one of the best sounds out there. When I can play this thing right (for about 3 notes), It sounds like a million bucks.
Anyway, I dont know anything about the 'market value' of this thing, but I do know it has some vintage value to it. I would be interested in selling it for $900 to a $1000, if anyone is interested- looking to get into a new tenor.

What do you mean when you say that the mouthpiece has "a huge hole"? A large chamber? The Guardala Studio is a small chamber piece!
As to the price, I sold my Alto Studio for 70 dollars to a young saxophonist who wanted it dearly. I thought it was much more useful with him than lying in my drawers.

sorry, the opening at the reed is very large, the chamber is rather small.

Dave made an alto piece for me in the 80's while he was still a cult-type entity. It's a worked Berg Larson 100/0 blank & has no markings to distinguish it as a Guardala. But I told him what I was looking for & he worked his magic.
It plays wonderful & I've never had a reason to want anything else for my alto.

Based on the fact that stroburg hasn't posted in a year and a half, what makes you think he'll respond to you now? Why don't you try to email him?
