Just looking for advice, I'm using a Yamaha YAS-23's stock ligature right now, looking to get one soon.

Vortex: I've used stock Selmer ligs most of my playing time. They are about the same as stock Yamaha ligs I'd imagine . . . metal two-screw/two-band ligs. Those work best for me and that's all I play is jazz (1920's style). DAVE

I would guess that the standard metal lig is still the most popular one in use today, in spite of Rovner, Francois Louis, Optimum, or whatever. Many have tried these ligs(myself included) and have returned to the old faithful. Some players have not because the newer ligs did help them. I think what you have to do is to look at photos of what the top Jazz pros are using today. Not yester-years pros(Charlie Parker, Paul Desmond, etc.) because metal ligs is just about all they had to use in their day. Unless a Jazz player is doing some kind of endorsement for a lig company, I venture to quess that many still use the metal ligs. Check the web site for photos of todays pros and see what their using. Joe.

For a long time I thought the metal 2-screws were the best but then I purchased a vandoren optimum and got a lot more of a responsive sound. For a while I also used the Rovner ligatures but felt that they dampened the sound a great deal, or at least how will I could hear it. I was correct (for me) and when I compared the three kinds, the Optimum won hands down, all 3 plates.

Not to say that will work best for you. Everyone is different and the wide variety of ligatures available just goes to show you how much this matters in terms of personal preference. For me what determined my choice was ease of response and articulation, which the Optimum got the best of. I didn't notice much of a difference in tone or projection among the ligatures, except that the Optimum seemed to achieve a brighter sound and allowed more overtones to come out.

I like the vandoran optimum(1st plate) for jazz, and I use that on my jody jazz. I play a rovner dark on for classical, on a caravan.

just go and try a few and see if any make a positive difference, i had a rovner and it made crap all difference for me, im not shelling out the £70 or whatever for the optimum coz for the diff it makes i could go and get 3 or 4 sax lessons. I just bought the francois louis only coz it actually did make a diff.
