Just bought the Universal Method book by DeVille and in the beginning it refers to keeping open certain keys when I play them. For example it says to keep open the VII key or the XII key when I play certain notes. Is there a reference chart for these numberings anywhere? They are also always referred to in roman numerals. I think the VII key is the octave key but am not sure what the XII key is? please help

It sounds as if the writer's code chart is missing from the book, or perhaps you just haven't found it yet? In the back? There is no universal numbering code I have ever heard of.

I have looked at jpgs of the pages in question, and from what I can figure out is this... (1) GordonNZ is right, there is a missing key chart, and further (2) the chart must be for a very old sax that has two octave key touches... in other words, before the advent of the "automatic octave key".
There is text explaining when to use these keys. In all cases with the numbered keys in question, the pages indicate that you switch from one key to the other as you ascend from upper register G to upper register A, and that these keys are not used for the low register notes.
