A $200 C'list find...the guy was moving to Germany and just needed to unload it. It was barely playable when I went to try it, albeit in very good physical condition with teh exception of a bad dent in the side of the bell which was made worse by someone trying to un-dent it themselves, obviously.

Regardless, that's only about a $25 repair. I got it home and stuck a light down it and there were only 2 very misicule leaks, one on the low C pad and the other on the low B. So I couldn't understand what was up...I had expected leaks on maybe the G# or one of the palm keys, or certainly the lower stack. But nothing there.

Then I messed a bit with the octave key area; tightened up a spring tension up there, shaved down a cork and bent the octave key just a tad and VOILA !....she now speaks up and down ! Might have been the octave key jumping or the body key not closing quickly enough.

Will do some more adjusting manana as it's late here now.

My undertstanding is these are mid-70's -80's horns.

Initial impression is a nice big, round sound and a pretty substantially-made horn. Not sure about the mechanics and action, however....seemed a bit clunky but again, I really need to play it more.

You are probably right. I had an alto like that for a while, you can email the Amati factory (to ascertain the vintage), they might take a while to answer. Great horn, quite bright, very "german" but with an even rougher tone... underrated in any case, IMO.
Congrats!

Looks *exactly* like my ATS-31, the successor of the Super Classic. I don't know when they switched over to the "Yamaha naming convention", but it must have been before 1993 as mine still is a "Czechoslovakia" made instrument.
70s..80s sounds good.

yes these horns are very common in Europe and go very cheap too, they have a not particularly good name (along with Weltklangs) and therefore are sold very cheap but they are way better than the people credit them to be

I`have Amati Super Classic deluxe tenor from 1963. It`s huge and deep sounding sax with very good intonation but mine is also pretty clangy, it is very mouthpiece picky, but with Otto Link it plays very warm almost Conn-ish.
Best luck with your sax.
