Hi,

I've just joined SOTW and bought a sopranino this week. i'm enjoying working with my tuner but wondered if anyone could recommend some nice music to play that would suit the nino? Ideally i'm looking for nino/piano that will show the lovely sweetness.

I like many styles, classical, Gershwin, contemporary, ambient, modern, jazz/blues.

I also play sop and alto saxes, clarinet, Flute, piano, and EWI, and enjoy performing, teaching and composing.

Can't play music on a sopranino

Now seriously, my first approach to exterme registers is to try'n use them as if they were a real instrument, not a freak, compassion worthy, requiring special repertoire.

I just play on a 'nino whatever I'd play on an alto (or baritone) And it works for me. Last time I played nino on a jazz combo, I used it on Stardust (slow, creamy and rapshodic ballad style) and a Monk feature wich I don't recall now (but might have been Well you needn't)

Hi,

Thanks for that, I will definately have a look at Stardust.

I do intend to treat the nino as a proper instrument and am looking forward to seeing what i can do with it and prove any potential scoffers wrong!

I have a jazz ballads playalong book that has a nice selection, so perhaps i'll start there.

I agree that alto parts would be the best. If you were in a concert band, then Eb clarinet would work. Stick with alto solos. A really fun horn to solo with.

Don't try to push ALL the air thru the instrument like you'd yo on an alto or tenor or bari. You have to lower your oral cavity floor, open the throat up, use an excellent diaphragm support, and do not bite. The Nino will reward your dedication then by sounding like a real saxophone and not a eardrum piercing contraption.
