If the straight tenor is a good idea, then why not a tenor-shaped bari? Just a thought for all the energetic entrepreneurs out there. I imagine a lot of the characteristic diffuse sound of the bari is because of the upper stack bends. Wouldn't a Eb tenor be cool?

I've seen an old drawing in Sax Journal depicting a circa 1920's fellow playing a "straight" bari. It still had the crook at the top but the bell was straight and tipped. The player was standing on a ~6" stool. There was no confirmation that one was actually built.

I'm holding out for a bass sax shaped like a serpent (the instrument, not the snake).

I think the idea of a tenor shaped bari would be difficult to pull off, in a playable form that is. I'm 6'4" and my bari is already a lot to handle. Now truth be known, I am really an alto player from way back, but I have played tenors and bari's when needed. For me, the joy of playing an instrument is the the sound qualities and not the uniqueness of a given instrument. That's why I buy top-end instruments with proven superior intonation characteristics.
I must admit though, I keep looking a the alto saxello. But if the intonation wasn't dead on, so that I had to lip up certain notes, I think I'd pass. Besides they are very pricey. They sure look nice though...
