Does anyone know of a dead silent sax mute? Today I got my first complaint. Damn it all! Ugh I'm korean but I got to say, a lot of us korean people are total #$(#U%@#). Most of us are shy wimps who are afraid to knock on the door and say, "could you please play saxophone a little earlier, I need to sleep", because they think it feels awkward.

guess what, first thing they do is call the cops. i've been playin at midnight for the past few days and we know that's the best time for sax (if you haven't tried it, you've been deprived). really, what kind a *** calls the cops on the first time without any forewarning. just the thought annoys me. I don't like cops either so seeing them at my door made me feel like music is a crime. I'd have been happy to stop for the day and shift my schedule an 3 hours back but apparently don't want to be 'awkward'. I'll trade all my korean neighbors (3 houses of them around me) for a really good black jazz player and some cool white people. (no intention of being racist, again i'm korean. an no stereotyping intended, it's just the situation with about 95% of koreans, really we won't come straightforward ever, well i would but I was born in Seattle)

now that i've ventilated a little anger (though I still have PLENTY) let's get down to the mutes. yes, there have been 1 billion threads and I hope one of the administrators will choose a good one to keep at the top bar because otherwise there will be an infinite amount to come, so...

I hear the eSax mute does the job. does it make the sax 100% silent? and I mean 100% because I was not jamming that loud so my neighbors are apparently very finicky. Any have experiences with any more economical mutes that probably do the job but only at a so-so level? This is because sometimes I play sax for 6 hrs a day and I can sympathize with students who live nearby who have to study. remember, i just hate their parents hehe (jk)

plenty of ebay mutes, none work as far as I hear. I've taken a rag and put it in the bell but it works a little less than okay and removes low Bb and other low notes if you push it too deep. and well, I'm a gordon style guy, so need that low end

blegh. now that I think about it, it really was my fault. just wish they came to me. i have this paranoia and hate for cops. cops can be big (@#)))#$@* because they look good when they give plenty of tickets. my dad got a ticket because a police guy said you have to wait 3 Mississippi seconds after you stop at a stop sign which is BS. i'm an american I know my rights.

well, as you can see I'm a little defiant haha but only when i'm mad

btw can the cops come if you smoke and the neighbors don't like it or get a little sick? I dont smoke but my dad does and the neighbors don't like it because they leave their windows open

esax mute works great and has excellent reviews. i don't personally own one but i've heard about it. it's quite expensive though.

practicing at an early hour would be the best option though.

if it's a non smoking zone the cops can come but if not then your neighbors aren't allowed to do anything.

Your TV is louder than the your sax in an e-sax mute case.
It will end your practice at home woes.

I agree that esax mute is the best.

is there anything cheaper that works? does the esax mute constrain you in any way? man they should make a cheap version

Some have mentioned difficulties in other Threads, saxophones being shaped differently; sometimes because of being older models which don't fit nicely in the mute, and others have mentioned problems which I think sometimes stem from not having a good mouthpiece/ligature/reed set-up.

biggest problem with the eSax mute is that they're $500 a pop and only fit 1 type of sax. plently of us play multiple kinds of saxes. i swear, they should have a Sax City in Elkhart where on sax players live and would could jam all day (sax heaven hehe)

Maybe midnight is too late even for a muted sax. I am a cool white, latino with a touch of good, black jazz player in me and I hate knocking on doors to tell people to be quiet. I'm not sure I would bother with knocking on anyone's door at midnight. I might wait until morning and knock on your door to talk to you. I hope a mute works for you.

Gee, sorry life is so tough for you. Must be a drag.
BTW, can you think of a reason someone would not complain if you're practing your sax at midnight?
Instead of all this time and energy ranting, why not just do a simple, basic search on:

emute?

Or practicing in an apartment:

I bought a Type 1 eSax mute from a fellow SOTW'er.
It cuts about 40% to 50% of the volume. The mic/amp on the type 1 does not have a volume control so I tend to play louder.
Best Brass in Japan sells the parts for their Type 1 and Type 2. The new Type 2 Mic/Amp will cost me about $200 AUD and has the volume control.
My YAS-275 does not have any problems in the eSax mute. I am not overly impressed with the hand positions.....but at least I can practise.
I have thought about using other types of mics with a phantom power box to drive them but it is easier to use theirs.....at the moment.
