Without changing necks (which are expensive and difficult to find), so just with different mouthpiece/reed combination, what would be easier/better: To brighten up a bit a Yani SC-992 or darken up a bit a Yani SC-991 ??

I have played both and I like them but I want one something in the middle.

Basically I like the warm, elegant and complex tone of the SC-992 but I would like it to cut a bit more... to be just a bit more alive/bright. However, on the other hand, if I buy the SC991 I will have $200- $300 spare money to buy a killer mouthpiece which could add complexity to the tone.

Your comments will help me to make the final decision.

Many thanks

asanchez: I'd go for the SC992, but that's just me. It is unusual to settle on the first after-market mouthpiece you acquire. You may end up spending more than you bargained for. Finding the appropriate mouthpiece may be more difficult than buying the horn!!

I had both the SC901 and the SC902 (still have the SC902). To my ears, either one is brassy and harsh, depending on mouthpieces. I put the straight neck from my S992 on the SC902 and that seemed to mellow the little monster a little bit (while at the same time using a Yana solid-silver straight neck on my S992) - no curved necks for me.

As to cutting more, don't depend on what you hear from behind the beast when you play it - it sounds entirely different out front. DAVE

Go for SC992, Bronze owns!
I have a S992 really liked it.
