how could i treat the reed with turpentine without it being toxic afterwards, and could i use it on the horn itself or the mousepiece?

My mousepieces run like heck when I try to treat them with turpentine.

I'd recommend tequila instead.

Soak the reed in turpentine for 40 days & nights, then shred it in a wood shredder, place in a spaceship, destination, the Sun. Problem solved!:alien:

Would that work for the mousepiece as well?

Hmm, this first time post sounds conspicuously like the work of a troll or something very near to it.:rolleyes:

To answer this dubious question, no there is not a way to treat a reed with a potentially poisonous solution and expect it to be safe to place in the mouth. And why on earth would you want to?

BTW,
This thread was moved to the REED Sub forum.

OK, I have a confession. No I'm not the turpentine guy. But........I have pressed Armorall into mine. Seems to make them last longer. I'm sure I'll be dead quite soon.

Armorall is a Silicone Emulsion. Eat at your own risk.

They claim non-toxic, but I doubt it. Probably not to skin.

"ARMOR ALL" PROTECTANT

* Non-flammable, non-toxic, non-corrosive.
* Guards against cracking, dulling and hardening.
* Prevents fading and checking.
* Stops deterioration of materials.
* For rubber-plastic-vinyl-leather-sealed wood.
* Odorless.
* Easy to use.

It's only good for asbestos reeds, 'cause two negatives make a positive, no?

When I think of the crap I played with as a kid, somehow a minuscule amount of silicone doesn't scare me too much.

Hell half the women in Baldwin County Alabama are 20% silicone. I'm thinking I might have already ingested some somehow or other (;

Hmmm " Honey I'm new in town and down on my luck, I have some reeds in need to treat".............

I have seen a lot of lame trolls in my life, but this one is terrible.

If I were a troll, I would start a thread about Obama and the Jazz Tax.

We should have a thread called the Bridge for trolls.

We need to get a troll that can get Phil Barone to say "Over 9000 Bergs" or something.

So, I'm guessing this isn't a serious questions then??

But, anyway, since we're here, on the subject of turpentine. It is a VERY toxic substance, despite what might be claimed!!!:shock: It is one of the main ingredients used in oil painting mediums, and we are supposed to clean our brushes with it, between colours.

When I first started painting it made me very ill!!! Just by breathing it in. For quite a few months when I started painting I had stomach pains and cramps until I worked out why. Now I use a plain Linseed oil medium and manage without having turpentine any where nearby.

IMO long-term use is carcenogenic. So, if there are any painters here, I'd strongly advise trying another option for mediums and paint-strippers anywhere in your house!

Perhaps this should have been a poll. Which is more dangerous? Soaking your reeds with turpentine, strengthening a weak spring or taking too much mouthpiece in...

Laurel Moore

Yes, that would make a good thread, how many people have been injured by their saxophone and how?
I bashed myself in the mouth with the mp only yesterday. A common injury I'm sure. ;)

Usually just happens once, then you learn from it. Though some horns... such as 10M's... seem always to be looking for round 2.

This method is homeopathic and guaranteed safe (not by me, but by someone...)

Step 1: pour 1 cc of turpentine into a large glass container.
Step 2: Add 1 liter of distilled water. Mix well.
Step 3: Take 1 cc of the resulting mix and put it in another large glass container.
Step 4: Safely dispose of the remainder of this mix.
Step 5: Add another liter of distilled water to the container you just put the diluted mixture into.
Step 6: Repeat steps 3, 4, and 5 at least six times. You may re-use containers after a good washing.
Step 7: Bottle and seal a small amount of the product. Make sure to use a glass bottle and a real cork (no synthetics!) for the stopper.
Step 8: Soak your reed in a glass of distilled water, and put it on the horn. Wave the glass bottle over the mouthpiece while chanting "Nam-myoho-renge-kyo". Two to five minutes of this should be sufficient.

Your reed should be no more toxic than it was when it came out of the box!

I can't believe that people on SOTW (myself included) have fed the troll by posting 25 responses to that post. Are we really that hard up for topics around here? :?

We've left the thread open so that the membership can, at the very least, get a laugh or two at the expense of the troll.;)

After all, that is the least he owes us for wasting everyone's valuable time and help.

I am from Denmark, and despite the fact that it is close to Norway where the REAL trolls :shock: are supposed to live, I was wondering as well, but thank God for the Urban Dictionary:
"One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument "

Trolling is a form of fishing where you just let your line into the water as the boat moves- a form of catching an unsuspecting fish. Not the same thing as a little demon like thing. I imagine that is the origin of the term, but I'm not sure of that, just a guess.

Well, Real trolls are said to be short and evil; trolling a forum would need you to be hidden and decisive.
