Hi there,

Is there anywhere I can hear different saxes being played? Particularly tenors? For example, I wouldn't know a conn from a selmer VI. Also, people use a lot of subjective terms like warm and open to describe tone. These conjour up mental images for me, but I'm not sure how I imagine those tones to be is what everyone else means!

I guess what I'm saying is, help me fake it and pretentd I know about saxes :D

there are actually many threads on SOTW which have been linking audiofiles to the post to let people hear saxophone's sounds , sometimes these have been also put in a Quiz form .
It is possible to hear a saxophone and comparatively say " this sound coming from this horn and this player (with his oral cavity, embouchure, reed and mouthpiece) seems to me " warm" or " cold" " , or "......has an " Sharp edge" or is " dull" "......but all this is personal perception there is no agreed terminology and indeed many people are, at times, confused by terms such as (dark sound? husky? projective? spread? I once used " hollow" ...... whatever that meant! ). There atre also sites where you can find audio files for mouthpieces or saxophones on line.
