Here are two clips of "Infant Eyes". I just started learning the tune today. The recordings are of the head w/ an Aebersold. I used an H2.
Hollywood 8 w/ a 2 1/2 ZZ reed:

I like the hollywood more... To me the gaia seems thin and trill to the hollywood, which is rounder and prettier

I feel the same way.

I thought they both sound fine. Which do you like? How easy are they to get that sound?

I know I already told you that you sound great!! But I'll say it again!! I like your sound better on the Hollywood too. I guess I should have bought a Hollywood instead of a Jazz. I can't afford one now. Unless someone wants to buy the Jazz from me so I can get a Hollywood?

I dig the Hollywood. I can get a meatier sound out of it, but perhaps thats because I have had it for about a week longer? They are both easy to play. I have to play on a 2 1/2 on the Barone. other makes of the same size, I play my usual 3. I cannot get a good subtone sound with a 3 on the barone.
Lovely playing. Really lovely.
What I hear is more edge to the Gaia, which I think adds some intensity to such a slow moving ballad. Your sound on the Hollywood has no edge and the sound to me is not as resonant. But that's not necesarrily a bad thing, it's just what one wants. For that song, I would want the Gaia. Maybe you could have pushed the Hollywood to get a little more intensity out or it, I don't know. For another type song, who knows?

I agree. The reed I was using on the Hollywood was slightly older than the day old one for the Gaia. I was just playing "Witch Hunt" on the Hollywood, with the idea of pushing it more.

I preferred the Hollywood. It sounded a bit thicker.

More clarity,actually with the GAIA.
' Clarity ' rather than ' edge '.

I agree with Gary's analysis. The Gaia sounded more complex and interesting to me. You sounded good on both, but the Hollywood kind of lost my attention- it was a little too sweet and polite. The Gaia had more variety in the tone.

I believe that both sound great, so I think your choice should lie in physical preference (i.e: how it plays over how it sounds). You have a really great, warm tone and I like your vibrato.

I liked the Gaia but it sounded a little flat to me. Maybe it wasn't pushed in far enough on the recording because of teh bigger chamber?

Dude: That was beautiful! Thanks.
I didn't notice a significant difference between the mouthpieces. Factors such as reeds, recording order, and familiarity with the mouthpieces might have made a bigger difference than the mouthpieces themselves. That said, I had a small preference for the Hollywood on that particular pair of clips. One thing's for sure: That was beautiful. Thanks again.
Hey, we're talking Infant Eyes here. Somebody get Dr G quick. ;)
I prefered the Gaia and to me it sounded as if you weren't straining as much to get your sound.

I think you sound more comfortable on the Hollywood.
People hear different things, or rather, the same things in a different way. I understand Gary's comments, but to me despite the relative lack of what he calls 'edge', I actually think that the Barone sounds more focused, and in that way clearer than the Gaia. The Gaia sounds somehow 'hollow' by comparison, but that can be attractive too, just depends what you want.
I think it will come down to which you feel most comfortable playing. Pick the one that allows you to forget that it's there! As Neff said, there were some intonation issues, but that could be you rather than the mouthpiece ;)!
Very nice playing. A good sound is worth a thousand notes IMHO. I'd rather hear someone play one note well with a good sound, than someone playing fast!

The only real insight is how a mouthpiece plays for you.
I know: ' how ... insightful ':TGNCHK: . But, it's true.
I used to have a Hollywood, and it was ok, but kind of a reed-eater.
I play a modified 50's NY Tonemaster and that plays well for me.
I'm on one of the lists for the GAIA so I'm anxious to see how those
2 will compare, as it looks similiar to what my Link is, now.
I think the facing will probably be better, but I'm curious how much
these 2 are in the ballpark as far as the interior dimensions and of
course the resulting sound.
But, I have a stenciled whiite Brilhart mpc here that plays great too
with harder reeds .
Not a Link-type response in the low-end.. e.g.- not fat and full, but in
the mid-high range it's very focused, and I could get used to it, easily.
I think the idea is to find something that you can play and then play and
hopefully improve, yes ?
No ?

I agree. I'm going to play the Gaia exclusively for the next two days to take stock at the end.
