I own an older Yamaha Tenor 62. What neck came on these saxes? Was it an M1? Anyway, the horn plays very bright. Will any of the necks (M1, F1, G1) I've been reading about make the horn play darker or increase the lushness of sound? I'm not sure if lushness is a word, but I am confused about how all these neck change the sound and what neck came on these old tenor 62's. The serial number is 019xxx.
Thanks.

I have pondered that too. My serial is 001415, or something like that. Or does all YTS-62 have same neck?

I did some checking. The classic 62 neck has been the same from the release till the 62II came out.
It never had a name. They did not name World War 1 until WWII either.
It is just the neck that came with the classic 62, or we could call it the classic 62 neck. It is not a M/F/G. These are all new since the classic 62 neck.
Does that help?

Interesting thread this - I have a 62 and have considered trying different necks but they are not easy to come by in the UK. If anybody has any experiences to share I would be very grateful.

well, I need a neck for my YTS61. Yamaha told me a 62 neck would work.
Rather than buying a new one, if any of you folks would want to sell yours, thinking that you'll be buying a replacement F, M or G for your own horns, then please know I might buy it: email is mpcbliss@yahoo.com I'm not picky about looks, as long as price reflects that. Thank you
I have 875 alto and tenor. In my opinion the M1 necks are pretty conservative, a tighter richly dark sound compared to the newer ones.
For tenor I bought an F1 neck several years ago. An improvement for me - a bigger sound with more brightness and color (they advertise as a bigh band sound). Not tried the G1 neck for tenor.
For alto, I have a G1 and M1 neck. The G1 is bigger and brighter, and works better for me. I can get more air through it and it is quite flexible for colors.
Have experimented with students who have 62's. Most like the G1 neck for alto, althought the M1 neck sounds big and darker.
THe necks make a substantial difference in how the horn feels and sounds. The ideal situation would be to try the various models with a friend or teacher along to listen.
A repairman will probably need to adjust the octave mechanism to match the 62, or the octave key may not open.

mpcbliss, I have tried the YTS275 neck on a YTS61.
I happened to nave both horns in the house at the same time so tried swapping necks. Both seemed to work equally well. The 275 neck is supposed to be based on the original 62 taper but i have not measured this.
