There are not many around, but I have played one. Its size is similar to a bari as the tube is doubled and the bore is smaller. It does look and feel different to most other saxes, as if an engineer has thought of a different way of building the keywork. However, it's fairly easy to get used to and the most surprising thing is getting to used to the low notes that come out of it.

hmm... it doesn't look that much bigger than a bari (though it is when you think about it)

This is a link to Jay Easton's site, the subcontrabass sax page (the tubax). He has a lot of good info on all the saxes, so look around!

basically they are saxes that are wound up like the bari sax neck reciever, except they double over themselves like 3 or 4 times, and stuff. if you look around jay eastons site, it shows an Eb tubax, and an Eb contrabass ( same horn in design, but wound differently, much like a BBb tuba and a sousaphone)

Hi !
The Tubax is a saxophone. A true E-flat contrabass, really low. But a bit original one:
It is narrow, approximately as narrow as a tenor sax, and uses barytone mouthpiece and reeds.
One gets quickly used to it. Easy to blow (moderate amount of air). Standard sax fingerings.
It is more wrapped than usual, so the Tubax is approximately as big as a barytone.
The maker is Mr Benedikt Eppelsheim, a nice guy in Munich, Germany. Speaks English.
His web site is www.eppelsheim.com/eppelsheim-blasinstrumente.html : Postal and EMail address there.
Also pictures and sounds of the Tubax and of the soprillo, a B-flat sax above the sopranino...
He also builds the "Kontraforte" (a better contrabassoon) and a bass saxophone -both missing on Eppelshdim's site.
Bye ! Marc

I just picked up Hidros 3, an album by Mats Gustafsson, Sonic Youth and friends. If you're interested in experimental music and low horns you'd probably dig it. Mats plays strictly Tubax on this recording.
