Colleagues in (Sax)obsession:
Reporting in on my new B&S Medusa.
Background: I am a returning player after around 35 years. Played into college then gave it up to go to war and then med school. Anticipating retirement and living again, hence I took out the sax again a month or so ago. I play a Martin Indiana Alto and a Conn 16 M Tenor. So you could guess that I like a full, dark, deep, rich tone.
I liked the build on the Yams, but they sounded too bright for me. I decided on either a JK or a B&S after reading up on these matters here in the forum. I looked all over for horns to test play. No luck. I was struck, though, by the many posts praising Dave Kessler for his business dealings with members. Then, I saw his post about the latest B&S horns the other day and I couldn't help myself.
The B&S Medusa:
I'm falling deeply in love with her - more each day. The build is great - top quality with ribbed construction. I got the Gold Brass model with the silver bell and bow. Intonation is deep, rich, and powerful with the Gold Brass neck (it comes with three to chose from). This thing blows so freely it SCARES me. I am using the old Selmer C* with a Dark Rovner Lig and a Rico (yeah, no cracks please) Royal #2 (embouchure is still retarded). But RICH? Like Butter and Honey babe!
I can do things with this horn I could never dream of doing with the old Conn. It plays low Bb ppp with no sweat. I tried to get a Sonny Stitt thing going by playing some, "When Sunny Gets Blue". I think I came close. WOW :D
This is ONE great horn.
Thanks Dave
