Hehehe...just rec'd my Collegiate silverplate soprano yesterday....#201,8xx
As seller described, it's pads are shot so it's not playable, half of 'em are falling out...but overall the horn is in pretty darn good shape....just needs a repad and reg. Interesting, it has exterior-ly beveled toneholes....no other Holton I have has beveled toneholes....
However, the pinky table has only 3 keys....AND...
...when I finger an E (RH/2)...there's an extra key cup on the back which closes.....its located below the F# cup and above the C and Eb cups...
...gosh, sure wish I could just hear it now...but it goes to the tech tomorrow, anyway.....in the meantime, perhaps someone can enlighten me ????

The G# and C# keys are made together in an "L" shape. When you press the lever, it opens both the G# and C# similar to modern horns. The small key on the rear is the alternate Eb. If it is connected to work, you can play Eb by fingering D and lifting the middle (E) finger. Used to go between low Eb and low C.
All of my Lyon & Healy horns have the G# lever like this. Also the high palm keys should be interlocking.

I also notice the Couturier/ L and H thumbrest, similar to Conn and Martin. This should be a beautiful player after restoration. Good luck.

Yes it WILL be a good one. I had the same horn that was a L&H and it was terrific. I bought the silver alto I am selling to match it but someone got the soprano before I could do the pads. Had the economy stabilized in the 30s, the Courturier/Holtons could have been a big seller.

A CollegiateI (designed by Couturier/Lyon&Healy) made spring 1928 in LaPorte, one of the very first Collegiate's!

201849 ??.....mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmaybe........:|
......why do you ask ?;)
Wow...I figured going by the Holton serial # lists I was looking at a '50's Collegiate, maybe. But this SN obviously doesn't conform to those lists ? ...Aha ! :
Note that there are very few exceptions of Holton saxophones of which serial numbers don't match the reconstructed line:
1. There are very rare CollegiateI (LaPorte type) saxophones built spring 1928 which bear the Lyon&Healy serial numbers (202xxx) instead of Holton SN.
Wow, that's kinda cool info....this one got into quite the bid-war on eFlay, actually (hope it wasn't with one of you folks)...I didn't really undertsand why...but now that the news you are all providing me is so good, I am (potentially) very happy....
OK, if you blokes think this is something kinda special, I will take it to my top-shelf tech....
Bruce, yes...interlocking LH palm keys...wow...wacky !!! What a heckuva idea....

Your soprano is a 'good old friend' of mine and a significant reference for my work on reconstructing a Couturier/Lyon&Healy serial number chart. Good to see it's your's now. Following posts in 'Holton saxophone; Serial number registry' deals with your new soprano (it's going to become a famous one;)):

How do you manage to quote from two different threads in one post (I'm a computer ignorant)?

...cut and paste....I went to the Registry thread, found your post, hit the "quote" button below, which brought up a new message window...then I just copied your 'quote' and pasted it back into the reply of my post on THIS thread...and closed the other thread's window without posting a reply....like this:
That soprano is one of the Courturier horns.
Right! This soprano saxophone SN#201849 was one of the very first 'Collegiate' which came out of the LaPorte factory after purchasing the production from Lyon&Healy, which was in spring 1928. It has a six digit serial number, beginning with a 201xxx (some with a 202xxx, like my Holton bari) stamped by the Lyon&Healy company!. Professionally fixed and played with passion, it will breathe the soul of E.A. Couturier, who ended performing 1928!
"Since I have my Lyon&Healy Couturier model
as my 'first' playing horn (alto), I can't stop researching the background of such great sounding horns, which came out of the LaPorte factory between 1922 and 1929. And this is part of the Holton history, too. Frank Holton (playing trombone) and Ernst Albert Couturier (great performer on cornet) were friends (Collegiate?!) together they created fantastic Horns (brass). Could the saxophone community accept that some of the best sounding saxophones were created by 'brass'-men?" (from my posting #84)
Note, that the number is written in a line , not in an arc. As I'm registrating all serial numbers of LaPorte made saxophones, I could identify this soprano as reselling on ebay this year.

Interesting, I had no idea that this horn was under surveillance....:TGNCHK:

Next to the quote icon there is a ("+) icon, the middle one. Move mouse over it and it says multi quote.
