I need a new stand for my alto. I'm based in the UK and have read good things about a "GIG" stand manufactured here but can't find any pictures or suppliers.

I've also read about Beechlers, but again can't find any UK suppliers. I have found pics though, and wonder is the part that holds the bell uncoated metal and will it scratch?

The main stand seems to be K & M - has anyone used these? Are they stable? I had a similar looking one (different make, I think), which was hopeless. I only had to put the sax on slightly off centre and it would topple over.

Oh, and what about the Protec stands? Any good? I'm also looking at Sax Rax but wonder if it might be too much strain just on the lip of the bell?

All help and advice is greatly appreciated.

You can find pictures of the Gigstand at www.meiselmusic.com.

I am the US importer/distributor of Saxrax stands. I have these stands used on tour with sax sections with Alicia Keys, the Temptations, Kirk Whalum (with Whitney Houston), Mike Phillips, and a number of other pros in R&B, Rock, Pop bands, as well as big band players. Also, many semi-pro players around the country. There have not been any reports of damage to the lip of the bell. The instrument is not supported by the rim of the bell. The expanded rubber covered upright portion of the "bullhorn head" is curved and contacts the bell right about the center of gravity of the instrument. There is just enough rearward tilt to press the upper rim of the bell lightly against the thick rubber covering of the head. The instrument is quite safe. For UK sales, or name of a store near you, contact sales@saxrax.com. John will give you the name of stores there, and I suggest checking them out yourself.

I use a K&M for my Yani T991 and it's fine. Very stable.

www.saxophones.co.uk supply Saxrax and the K&M range + one or two others. They also stock the new Saxxy by K&M. this is a lightweight stand that will store in the bell of your sax. I recently bought one and I'm very impressed.

Good for those times when you forgot to take your bigger stand or couldn't be bothered to hump it around with everything else.

Hope you get sorted Girl. Let us know what you chose and how you like it.
