I guess there are now enough Kohlert Players in the forum to ask this one.

What kind of music do you play with your Kohlerts and what mouthpiece or pieces do you team with your horns?

I play rock and R&B mostly. I use a Jumbo Java A75 on my Edgeware Alto, and I use a Dave Knox Custom on my Kohlert Tenor. I've also used a Quantum 11 on the Alto with good results. Can't get the high notes real well with my T95 Jumbo though. Let me know your experiences. -thanks

I use a Kohlert Regent tenor with a 5* Otto Link New York and 3 1/2 Vandoren JAVA reeds.

Since my original posting I've switched to Vandoren ZZs.... still 3 1/2

I use a HR Berg 95/0 on my Kohlert 57 alto. I get a bright, fat sound on it, but I have found this horn to be rather difficult intonation-wise - and this one has had a complete overhaul. It seems to prefer very small chambered pieces. Does anyone else have intonation difficulties on their Kohlert?

I have to work pretty hard to keep certain notes in tune... most notably the high A, Bb and B... the registers on my Regent are considerably different. Far more so than the Series II alto and tenor I also play.

Hi,

I just switched from a Selmer Mark VI to a Kohlert 57 alto.
I use the Dave Kessler NYSS Custom MP with Rico Royal Jazz 2H.
This gives me the smokey nice sound I need for playing in my soul and funk cover band.
I made a blind test with the band by not telling them that I use a different setup but they noticed traight away. I still can not believe that this horn is so nice to play and actually is in tune from top to bottom.

I picked mine up from Ebay in February and have not started to use it until beginning November after it came back from a basic setup check from my repairman. I was basically shocked because the horn does not look like it would produce such a nice tone.

I can just encourage anyone still in doubt whether to pick up a Kohlert 57 or not. At least if you have a chance - try it.

I've found that the altissimo fingerings I've always used on Yanagisawa and Yamaha altos don't translate very well to the Kohlert 57. I'd be interested to know what fingerings other are using and whether they require much lipping up or down for good intonation.

High Fis:

all fingers down and octave open BUT both middle fingers up.
Works very easy. Also try to cover the low B C with the pinky table.

Well. it's an old thread but I just thought i'd update my Kohlert/Edgware tenor setup info. I haven't played it out for nearly 2 years, but today, I had an outdoor Rock/R&B type gig and decided to bring it along and try my 4****Link on it. I gotta say, it makes an awesome 40's-50's R&B setup; Not rowdy but Kinda dark with that Link edginess down through the middle of the tone, pretty much from top to bottom. It blows my mind that these Kohlerts can sound sooo wicked!

Kohlert 55 stencils

Tenor with a runyon comet #8 and a soft bari synthetic reed

Alto with a keilwerth tone king mpc and medium bari reed. I plan on trying a comet on my alto as well.

I play mostly progressive rock, jazz rock, standards and easy listening pop stuff. mostly Tenor.

The Kohlert horns (55 and 57 in particular) are versatile horns that IMO will hold up against any other vintage horn.
