What are peoples opinion on these? How do they play? Can someone tell me what link they are copied from? Is it a florida model or an earlier link? Are the offered in more than one tip opening - the website doesn't specify? I'm seriously considering buying one of these - I'm looking for a vintage link sounding piece and I don't want to pay the ridiculous prices that the vintages are selling for.
thanks for all your assistance!

saxtim-
I have a vintage Link copy from Ackermann and its fantastic. If you've been searching for a 60's Link with no "USA" on it - this is it.

I was looking at the metal link, not the hard rubber

Someone has tried the tenor hard ruber model?
I'm looking for a mpc like lamberson J, Morgan L...... How the Bob ruber compares with thia mpc's?
I have a Bob Ackerman metal tenor piece. It's a .102 but he makes them from .100 to .110. I believe they are copies of a FL Link. Mine plays great and the finish work is very good. I talked to Bill Pierce about them and he seemed to think they were good playing pieces.

I bought a Hardrubber .108 from a fellow SOTWer. It plays alot like the Morgan 8L I tried, and it is not as bright as the Lamberson J. Its brighter than my HR Link thats why I'm going to sell it for $150 if anyone is interested. it does play real well with a loud, dark sound. Plays great in tune on my Conn's. I just really prefer my Link but this is modeled after a Link from the 60's
Mike C:
Do you think the Lamberson J is brigter than the Morgan L?
I don't understand. The Lamberson J is a no-bafle mpc and the Morgan L has a litle rollover bafle.....

Elo. its amazing how much volume the J Lamberson gets, It s notr a dark sound though at least as I view dark. Out of the Lamberson,Morgan and Lost Wax the brightest was the Lamberson and the Ackerman was the darkest

Mike C -
I'm interested in your Ackerman HR .108...Is it in new/excellent condition? I think I saw your other post a few days ago about this mpc on the vintage Link discussion is that right? What size does the .108 equate to? I'm looking for a 7 or 7*. Have you compared this to the Theo Wanne?
Let me know - Thanks EL

A Link 7* tenor is supposed to be .105" so a .108" may be very close - the remaining difference being the length and schedule of the lay.
Which Theo model? He has done a lot of variations on the theme.
I agree with Mike that the Lamberson "J" is anomalous. Although it has no baffle, it does play with incredible ease, color, and volume. I was completely floored when I tried the J8 on my Borg'. Fred is a master.

Dr G-
Thanks for the info re: 7*. I'm not sure which Theo Wanne would be comparable - open for input here too. I have been playing a HR Lamberson 7M for the past 10 yrs but now looking for a mpc that is less bright at the top and thought that either a vintage Link (too expensive) or its modern day equivalent might be the right thing.
Thanks again! - EL

P.S. It's brand new.

What are you buying in favor of the Ackerman?

In my experience of playing several variations of Theo's Link-like 'pieces, they tend to the "hot" side. If you're familiar with Fred's work, why not consider one of his darker models? I've gone to the dark side with his "J" model and find it still has lots of color and flexibility. Next best in my experience has been a Morgan "L". The Morgan is half the price but the Lamberson is much more interesting to play. Tough call regarding "value". You might even call Fred to see if he'll rework your 7M to darken it down.
Go for the tone.

A question is need to get a Bob Ackerman's vintage FL Metal Link copy or Jody Jazz's ESP? Which is more worthy to buy?
For me, I consider ESP may be more flexible because it has a spoiler (a Dark Rovner lig is nothing, many people may not like this lig and it cost very little). By adding the spoiler, I can add more edge on my sound. What do you think ?

Has anyone done a comparison of the Ackerman metal link copy and the BD Hollywood copy? Bob suggested the Hollywood copy for my Chu tenor, and I'm wondering what experiences people have had with it.
