What would be a good price to buy a 1919 model for? I've been offered one by someone who knows nothing about saxes and would like to make them a fair offer.

Somewhere between £4000/$6000 and £5000/$7500 is the going rate in the states. It all depends on the condition of the body as well as pads and what not. The high side is the "dealer" price, and seems to be about average amongst the dealers. £4400/$6500 seems to be the average going rate with private sales. If it doesn't have a case or mouthpiece, be prepared to spend a decent bit on those, and I highly recommend buying a SaxRax stand for it as well. Which will run you a couple hundred quid

Ya man, not a problem. Not sure if you have played these before, but if you don't have a mouthpiece, the Otto Link STM 7*'s make great bass mouthpieces. I had Paul Coats reface one for me and it's a beast. He studies with Santy Runyon, and the Links are big enough so you can put a true bass curve on the facing.

That website will be a great resource for you. Helen is a great person, and she has a very similar bass *Buescher not Conn, but everything is applicable on both*. In that website is info about stands, reeds, mouthpieces, the custom case she had built, and a whole lot of other neat stuff. Great resource.

If you are looking to purchase a bass sax the Bass Sax Coop (http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/Bass_Sax_Coop/) is a great resource with many of the key bass sax techs, players, and collectors in the world participating. The level of expertise there is impressive and they are easy people to talk with.

You will also find bass saxes for sale such as my Buescher TruTone bass sax (http://gandalfe.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!51AA828BCB20646!6052.entry). Enjoy.

Gandalfe, I have a question about one of the pictures in that add of yours -- is that a standard Hercules Bari Stand you have for you bass or is it modified in some way. If its just a normal one, that's awesome that I'll be able to use my bari - alto/tenor stand for it when I get a bass..

Eventually.. :(

check his FS thread on his Buescher bass, he mentions that he modified it a bit to hold the bass bell.

I don't recommend using that stand solution and only did it until my SaxRax arrived.
