according to the "saxpics" poll, the Kohlerts(55/57) are rated the # 2 R&B tenor. i'm well pleased with my B&H Edgeware, but i am curious as to how they stack up against #1, the King Super 20. anybody have experience with both. i had an S20, silver neck, side pearls etc, but that was years ago. i let it go for "chump change"(let's don't talk about it) because i couldn't get that "trane sound". also, are the results of the entire "saxpics" poll available?

This can be interesting. i was thinking the same. what kind of sound these horns get. is it on the selmer side or the king side?

I think this "Kohlert = top two RnB horn" is interesting as well. I'd be interested to know where and how it originated and on the basis of what evidence. I have owned a Kohlert 57 alto and recently bought to sell a Kohlert stencil tenor. Both were good horns in my opinion. But I've never been clear about whether the very high praise of Kohlerts is hype or whether it originates with people with a lot of experience of playing Super 20s as well. Good thread, xax. :)

I still own a vintage Kohlert from about 1962. It's a really great horn. I think one of the things that makes it a good R&B horn is the fact that they're available for such a good price. Tonally they remind me a lot of vintage JK's.
