There's alot of Conn shooting stars sold on ebay, that should give you somewhat of an idea of what some folks will pay. I've seen them sell up to around $500 but usually average around $300. Good luck

I paid $525 for a nice tenor about a year ago.

Be careful to get an early serial number. The later ones are made in Nogales (?) and are not as good. Other people can tell you more about this than I can, or read some of the threads in the archived forum. Muthapotomus contributed to a lot of those old threads (I think).

Sax Maniac, it really depends on the vs what comparable horns are going for in YOUR area. Ebay prices are lower than what the rates are in my neck of the woods.

Is the tech offering you $800 for the horn?

What's the serial number of the horn?

Got any pics?

I really couldn't venture what you could get the horn for without that. Plus, I could only tell you what they would go for in my area, not yours.

Generally, shooting stars with a "N" prefix don't get as much money as the earlier models. This is mostly due to the stigma of being produced in Nogales,AZ/Nogales MX and not in Elkhart, IN like the earlier horns.

A couple of really good sites to learn more about these horns are www.saxpics.com and www.saxgourmet.com. Both these sites are great resources.

Personally, I happen to think these horns are highly underrated. If you can get used to pre-modern keywork (which is quite easy on a properly regulated horn) you get that authentic vintage Conn sound that no modern horn can replace.

Right now the ebay value on these horns is such that you can get a really nice one for less than $500. There's a lot of bang for the buck with these horns & replacement parts are plentiful & cheap especially if you've got a parts horn. I just got a Silver plated 686,xxx last December for around $525. It played right out of the box with a nice fat bottom end...and it's a really good looking horn!
