View Full Version : There is something about the Dukoff/Super 20 setup

I play an old Miami Dukoff D4 (opened up to a D7, probably by Mojo) on my S20 tenor and find it a great setup.
Recently, I wanted to sell my S20 alto because, having tried different mouthpieces on it, I found its sound mediocre, stuffy, and stagnant. Before I sent it off to a friend who agreed to trade his Buffet S1 for it, I played the horn one last time and thought to myself, why not try a Dukoff mpc on it and see how it sounds?
So, with some cigarette paper, I put my tenor Dukoff mpc on the S20 alto, and WOW, what a difference it made! The horn became alive, singing effortlessly from altissimos to low Bb.
And, as you guessed it, I decided keep the S20 alto and am now getting a Dukoff alto mpc.
I can't think of words to describe the sound that comes out of the Dukoff/S20 setup, but it is unique.

After ALL that and trying to sell it, you change your mind?!~ Don't try to sell it here again. And if you do, I'll offer you $400 for it.
But as far as the tenor Dukoff on your alto, that's a large chamber piece on an alto. With a high baffle. I had a S20 alto and Dukoff alto worked but did not do it. It's like a V12 in a VW Beetle. I also had an S20 tenor and the Dukoff tenor that was AWESOME. Ferrari. Still have the Dukoff tenor. I would stay committed to your agreement. The Dukoff alto will not be what you hope it is.

Why the hate, Turnaround, about me selling or not selling my horn here? If you don't buy it, fine; but there is no need to say "Don't try to sell it here again. And if you do, I'll offer you $400 for it."
Who in his right mind would sell a like-new S20 alto for $400?

You are backing out on an agreement?

The new dukoffs are not nearlly as good as the old ones.

No hate intended. Just, with as much effort (http://forum.saxontheweb.net/showthread.php?t=105712) as you put into selling the horn, at the last minute when you have a trade, you back out???
I'd be surprised if I was the only one to think that.
I'm trying to help actually, as my opinion on the Dukoff/S20 alto setup is not a friendly setup. Bright and loud. The tenor can actually handle that much better.
But the Dukoff on an S1!! Now we're talking.

I would second the thought to be careful. A tenor mouthpiece on an alto will always yield different playing results of an alto mouthpiece of the same brand because of the chamber size and facing lengths/differences.

I tried more or less the same thing on my 379xxx Silversonic alto, now normaly i use an old selmer soloist D with v16 2.5 reeds, i had borrowed a Dukoff D8 for the tenor (which i dident like at all) but tried it on the alto just out of curiosity i supose, went state on without any toilet paper and sounded great but the tuning was at best a semitone out, but never followed it up with an alto version, but would gues that the alto version would sound different again, for a start the chamber would be bigger on the tenor version and the facing curve would probebly be a bit longer as well.

The Dukoff D8 arrived, and as expected, it makes my S20 alto sing!

Good for you Yellowhorn.
I think that turnaround is referring to your sales pitch which read like this:
"....As can be expected from a Super 20, this horn has a huge sound. And because the horn is all-brass, its tone is warmer than that of silversonic ones. As for playability, this horn sings effortlessly from top to bottom........"
which is slightly difficult to match to :
"......Recently, I wanted to sell my S20 alto because, having tried different mouthpieces on it, I found its sound mediocre, stuffy, and stagnant....."
perhaps you shouldnt'have described you horn as rich and vibrant if you thought it was stuffy and stagnant, don't you think?

The foundation of the market place is hear is entirely based on trust. We don't really have anything but that to ensure the exchanges take place to satisfaction. I am glad you have a saxophone that you love, though I agree your advertisement was troubling

I know my Silversonic tenor seems to respond better with a high baffled mouthpiece. Should I put the rollover on it I use for my 10M (and it's a perfect match for that horn), I just don't get the magic.
