Got my first vintage sax last week form the good people [Sarge and Justin] at Worldwide sax.com. I purchased the 1957 10M (original silverplate w/goldwash) that was in 'Justin's Corner' on the tenor page. I went for their premium rebuild (teflon friction reduction, ultrasuede instead of felt, and saxgourmet kangaroo skin pads). The job Justin did was phenomenal.
The 10M absolutely sings! I don't know which feels better, the buttery soft action or the resonance this beautiful old girl sends out. Practicing long tones is now like seeing a double rainbow! The premium rebuild was a bargain at the price and Curt's (MusicMedic) Saxgourmet pads should be called Stealth Pads they're so quiet. They seem to seal perfectly even though they're not yet fully broken in. I am definitely inspired to take my game up to the level this horn deserves, and it will be a long time before someone can pry it from my hands.
Sarge is every bit as great to deal with as my experience was with Dave Kessler (and that says a lot)! I found tons of great references peppered around the SOTW site but none posted here and I think I know why! Everyone covets more than one of the horns Sarge has for sale, and is afraid someone will buy it before he/she can scrape together the dosh to get it! I also have to give Sarge a big thanks for taking the time and energy to share his skills with Justin.
I can only say if you're in the market for a vintage horn you have to include a look at http://www.worldwidesax.com/.
Hope I didn't break any unwritten rules by letting the cat out of the bag. Some of the above was from posts I made in other areas, or from my e-mail to Sarge and Justin thanking them for the great service they provided.
