Hi, I am looking to buy a new mouthpiece for my bari. I have a Yamaha YBS-52 and I'm playing on the factory mouthpiece. I get a really great sound on the mouthpiece (believe it or not). But my problem is that when I am in a gig, I dang near have to have the microphone stuck half way down my bell to be heard. So I want to get a new mouthpiece. Probably something in the $200 range that really projects but isn't too edgy. What mouthpiece would you guys suggest for me to buy and what is a good tip opening?

On the cheap, you can try a Bari brand plastic reed on your stock MP. This will give you a notch "more".
If you have good lung cacity, RIAs are good. I like a metal Runyon Quantum. RPC is another contender as is a Lawton P or B. Dukoffs and Bergs can work, but you will most likely need to get a hand finished one and get a baffle to you liking.

I'll second Mojo's Runyon Quantum recommendation.

On my YBS-52 I really like the Lawton 6*BB (Stainless) for most jobs. Its is easy playing and projects well. Intonation is very good throughout. For a different (darker) sound the Lawton 8B plays well-but does require a bit more air than the 6*BB. My 6*BB has a .114" tip opening and my 8B has a .125. Both are stock with no modifications. Bari sound is more reed dependent than the other saxes-so try some different ones. The Bari*'s give a bright, clear, tone with the Lawton pieces. LaVoz also works well if you like a cane reed. Plastic covered cane reeds also produce brightness in sound.
