My repair man just called me. My six is done getting it's overhaul. It's funny , He said that all the VI's he fixes he noticed that the VI's with the bell brace that has "Mark VI" engraved don't seem to play as well as the ones that have Mark VI stamped. He said he knew it sounded crazy but he swears it seems that way. So for all you guys that are wondering if it's a killer VI just look to see if it's engraved or stamped. The mystery is solved.

Did your repair tech identify any serial number ranges?

NO. But this is a 174,.... I think maybe he was talking about the later models. He was totally serious too. I don't know why some would be stamped and some engraved. Maybe they were made in different places?

The cosmetics and some minor design features changed over the years, including the engraving and markings. The tech's opinion is probably linked with the age of the horns he has seen. Obviously engraving itself is not going to be a factor, but helps identify the age and it's exact design, quality of workmanship and even the accuracy of the jigs and machinery used at the time, which allegedly just rolled up and died eventually!

Stamped or engraved? How do you tell the difference? Is the engraved "Mark VI" more stylized, or what?

Mine has 'Mark VI' engraved in quite angular stylised letters on the band around the join of the main body tube to the bow. I have seen pics of others with it stamped on the body elsewhere with a die. I remember seeing this, looking at some horns on bram geene's site and he assured me all of his were quite legit. You might want to look at what he has on bramsax.nl, there's usually a load to llok at.

The only true way to tell if your VI is one of the "good ones" is if the digits of the serial number add up to the magic number, which is 6, of course!

So - 79413:
7 + 9 + 4 + 1 + 3 = 24
2 + 4 = 6

It's a good one!

Or - an example of a good six-digit:
197574
1 + 9 + 7 + 5 + 7 + 4 = 33
3 + 3 = 6

LOL.....max, that makes about as much sense as many of the other methods of discriminating between them! How about this for a real novel way to tell if you have a good one:

Play it and listen to it, then decide.

4+7+0+3+9=23 2+3=5 OH NO!!!!
Oh Wait. I have a SBA not a 6 so the number should come out to 5. YAEH!!
