I have posted a transcription of Sonny Rollins' solo on What Is This Thing Called Love from his days with the Clifford Brown/Max Roach Quintet on my website: www.scooby-sax.com

There are some beautiful lines and classic bop ideas in Sonny's solo.

Enjoy!

I have been working on I'll Remember April (from this album). I have the first Chorus memorized. I also took off Sonny's solo on The Scene is Clean but have not written them down. This for me is the real hard part.

Not directed at you SMT, but :

I think having the ears is more important than seeing the notes on the page.

Seeing(hearing) them on the page of your mind(inner ear) is where it's at.

If the chord changes of a tune like I'll remember April or what is this thing
are internalized then it should be easy to hear what a player is doing over
them .

I agree with you about hearing and not seeing the notes, however writing them down once they are learned is a good thing in that at least you have some sort of record of your hard work to refer back to.

A while back I took off a Dexter Solo over Star Eyes. I had it down, I mean I could play it in my sleep. With the recording, without, whatever. Recently I went back to it with my horn in my hand. I played fine through the first chorus and a half then I started to stumble. I forgot a lot of it. I actually had to use valuable practice time to relearn some of it. I wish that I wrote it down.

I have added Sonny's solo from the master take on What is This Thing Called Love. It makes a nice companion to the first solo I posted. You can see how Sonny retains and reworks ideas between the takes.

Enjoy!
