I recently acquired a 400 Tenor and it still needs some work to get it into playing condition, but I like to get ahead of myself at times... :D

Any suggestions on a good MP to go along with my new horn? This is my first tenor in a long time as I have been working solely on my alto and sop. so I need to invest in a new MP. The last time I played tenor, although a long time ago, I know I played with a stock Yamaha piece with which I was sorely unimpressed.

I'd prefer a bright, full sound, but also value versatility.

Thanks in advance and my apologies if this belongs on the MP forum.

Cheers!

I tried many brands of pieces. Berg, Lawton, The Hawk, Plastic Rico royal Graphite etc. The Runyon Metal quantum with a spoiler allows me to play the low subtones and the altissimobetter than all of the others I've tried. I tried a #9, #10, and #11. The #10 for me played miles better then any other. I don't like the sound without the spoiler and it plays everything much better with the spoiler. Free blowing, plenty of volume great sound.

Try a Ponzol M2, these work very well on the Buescher tenors. Links may be ok but the Runyon customs work very well too.

Using the VanDoren T-75 on my TH&C tenor. Not the jumbo. No baffle. The tip opening is 105. This piece seems to match the horn well in terms of versatility and power. This horn is so incredible though, I'm jonesing to try some other MP's. I'll follow this thread for tips. More feedback please.

You might also try the Runyon Jaguar.....works great on both my Aristocrat tenor and MK VI. Warmer, richer sound than the Quantum, though not quite as loud. It seems to get a bright sound that is fat and warm at the same time.
