I recently ordered the ultimate thumbhook from Tim at saxalley because the original plastic thumbhook on my Mark VI tenor just didn't feel right as I held the horn. I needed to adjust the existing thumbhook up a little bit to be more comfortable and the stock thumbhooks only adjust side to side.

The thumbhook came from Tim very quickly and it made the horn feel very comfortable in my hands. Additionally, the horn vibrates in my hands the way I like. I didn't get the same sensation with the original thumbhook.

I should add that the thumbhook is really well made and the best $40 I've spent on a horn.

Hurling,
Could you tell me what the thumb hook is made of and how does it attach to the body of the sax and also Tim's email address. I have a 1936 Conn 10 M I have just purchased and I am trying to get the feel and the balance right. Did you have to remove the old thumbhook or can this one fit on the sax as
well? If you have email my email address is : pogrady@ shoalhaven.net.au
or I will watch for your posts on S.O.T.W. Incidentally I am also making enquiries about the codera Addjust strap ring balancer but I still think I an going to have to change the thumb hook to feel comfortable. I,m in Australia and can't get to see these things here. Regards

jazzbeau75, it wouldn't work on your conn 10m unless you ship it to tim glessman and he'll do the installation. for your horn the original thumb rest(hook) has to be removed and then add a base plate to then srew in the new thumb rest(hook). its a nice heavy brass thats laquered or gold plated and adjusts up or down or side to side.

The other option on a 10M would be to have your local tech install a Selmer style (Selmer, Yamaha, or Yanagisawa) thumbhook base and then order the thumbhook from Tim if the one that your tech installs fails to feel comfortable.

Thanks Hurling and Dolphyo for your replies to my query. I've made enquiries from Wolf about the codera adjustable ring adapter and he is going to see if it can work on a vintage 10M and get back to me. But he says he thinks it will fix the balance for me if it can fit . So I'll try that first and go from there.

I have ultimate thumbhooks on 4 of my Horns. two Yam. 62 (alto and sop) , Yana 880 bari, and I had a Yamaha plate put in place of the Conn Thumbhook on my 12m bari (that original Conn hook is only for the completely masochistic as it's painful.
Tim's Ultimate thumbhooks are great!

When I played Hurling's sax (when it was in the shop) I must agree that it is very comfortable, and adjusts whereever you want it! I tried a kooiman thumbrest the other day, I need to spend more time with it, but my first impression was good. The barone thumbrest is also interesting (which a friend of mine is selling). I also think I'll order the thumbres from music medic in the near future. Too bad no one makes one that fits on Keilwerths (I know I could install a selmer style TR on it) I find them to be rather awkward.

I ordered a Ultimate Thumbhook for my MK VI tenor a couple of years ago and love it; I highly recommend it. Tim is especially service-oriented and you can trust him!

I don't know if there are pics, but you might want to check out Tim's site here:

I got an email from Tim saying that he hasn't got a picture of the thumbhook.

Could someone who's got one post a picture here ? Thanks.

Does Tim's Ultimate Thumb hook have that extended part for the last part of the thumb?

If you're thinking of it being similar to the old Phil Barone thumbhook then the answer is no. It's a standard looking thumbhook.

Can someone please post a picture of this? If it looks like a standard thumb hook, how is it any different? It simply adjusts in more directions? Is that the only special thing about it?

Wasn't there a hook that opened the hand position as well as raised the hook upwards? I thought I remember seeing one advertised a few years ago...

thanks.

I also noticed this one being offered for sale recently. I'd like to find something useful for soprano, but on the other horns, I wouldn't mind if there was no rest at all as the idea is to get the weight on the strap.
