Hey folks,
I'd love to hear what set-ups folks have used on their vintage Beuscher altos--specifically ser. III Arisotcrats.
Thanks,
Rory

I really love these altos -- I've been playing my 342xxx 140 a lot lately while my 400 was in the shop, and I love its sound. I think these are pretty flexible horns as far as set-up goes, so that your conception and what you're shooting for is more important than trying to "match" a piece to the horn.
On altos I'm a Meyerish kind of guy -- at least so far -- so pieces in that style have been what I've gravitated toward: currently a Phil-Tone fits the bill, but I've also used regular Meyers and Tenney Meyers, and also thought a Vandoren V16 A6 was great on the horn. I've also used Soloist and Soloist-style pieces and liked them -- but not enough to pull my away from Meyer type pieces.
Are you asking, Rory, because you've had some problems finding something that feels good, or are you just "gathering data" as a prelude to trying some pieces?

Data gathering mostly. I just couldn't resist the rebuilt Aristocrat that Jason Dumars put up for sale. He's including a Meyer 6, but I've always played Links on alto. I'm thinking I'd like to try a really nice STM on alto. I'm like a smoker--I've already quit playing alto twice, but here I go again!

That copper-plated one?! If so, what a score: that horn looked BEAUTIFUL! Dang!
(I gazed longingly at that one for a while -- I love mine, but it's an abused relaq, not a looker at all...)

This habit's better for your health!

That's the one. I tried to talk Jason out of it, but he insisted!:)
