Hi Everyone,
My question is, if you play a True Tone Soprano, what mouthpiece do you use? I use a Selmer Super Session H. That seems to work best for me. I have a Bari HR that works well too. I tried a metal Yanagisawa but the tuning suffered. I'm interested in mouthpieces you can play without shortening them so that they play in tune. Thanks,
Robert

I have a curved True Tone that plays very well with the original Buescher mouthpiece. I also got one from Chu Jerry with a more open tip that works very well (I believe he made it from an old Buescher blank).

Found a great match for mine in a Super Session I some years ago. When I found a discounted H for sale I thought I'd give it a go; trying something that might not be as much work. Hated it though. That's when I figured what the heck and tried a J, as others had advised. Even better. The soprano Super Sessions just seem to get better the more open they are.

Bari Gold metal works best for me, followed by Yanagisawa ebonite. I've tried a metal Runyon, which was OK, and a Selmer C** S80, which was dull, dull, dull. Bari easily the best both in terms of tone and intonation.

That's just crazy...I use the exact same piece. It was the best mpc out of several that I tried that had good intonation up and down the scale. I am actively reducing the hardness of reeds though, from 3.5 to...? Something about old age and jaw fatigue and crap like that.

An old Selmer metal scroll soloist. C* Nice and dark and works beautifully on my TT and Martin.
I sometimes use the original TT piece with my Buescher, not as powerful but so, so pretty!

I used to play my curved Buescher TT with an old Buescher piece slightly opened up, great soft classical tone but a bit difficult to play in tune over the whole register.
The intonation improved when I changed to a vintage Selmer C** Soloist. The tone is a bit jazzier but I don't mind that at all. I guess the smaller chamber just works better for me.

I agree with Bruce Bailey. I have played straight and curved Bueschers with everything from a Vandoren S27/SL3/SL4 to Yani 5 to Meyer 5 to Otto Link 5 and many more pieces and not had a problem with intonation.

I have a very old curved Truetone-(no F). The original Truetone mouthpiece plays flat for me. I've had good luck, believe it or not, with a 7* STM and also my Super Session I. These play in tune quite well and modernize the tone a bit.

meyer new york 8 oem
vandoren V16 S7 and S8 soloist chamber clones
bari HR 72
Super Session J enlargened chamber
OEM oval logo stubby
I like the tone better with larger chambers but the emission of the high notes is better with squeeze chambers if they aren't too small.

AS with most vintage sopranos, the large chambered mouthpieces tend to have better intonation. Today I went through a bunch of mouthpieces on a TT straight I just finished. The fatties worked well but just didn't have quite the projection of the modern pieces. My Super Session was good but a bit edgy. I found the Yamaha 5C to be the best followed by the 4C. The Yamaha Custom had a bit of trouble with intervals. One think I do on many older horns (Including this Buescher) is to put a plastic sleeve (Q-tip shaft, blue) in the upper octave pip. The hole is so large that A2, B2 and C2 were screaming sharp before. This can be removed when needed.

I've been using one of jicaino's large chamber mouthpieces on my curved Buescher. Simply amazing.

Thanks for the replies. I think this is the longest thread that I have started.
