The best mouthpiece for my Conns is still the Selmer Super Session. A bit expensive now running about $150 new but the largish chamber and long facing make it a good choice for me. I use a D but many go way open.

Well, :) , I played a Runyon Custom 7 (refaced by Jon Van Wie) for several years, on a Conn 6M and it worked really well. Had kind of a late Art Pepper vibe to it. Sometimes even a sweet sound to it if that's what I wanted. It could also cut and sound brighter when I played in pop bands. Worked very well on lead alto also. Actually, my section mates liked it better than the Meyer 6M (also JVW refaced) I had been previously playing.

After that, I used a Jody Jazz ESP, which also gave a very nice sound and was very easy to play. I think I played the JJ for about two years but sold it and went back to the Runyon.

...If that doesn't work then I will go back to a Runyon, this time getting a 6 and then I can try to get it refaced to a 7. Any other ideas?Just try a Runyon 7. No need to get a 6 and have it opened. The facing may be a little off on the 7, but you may luck out and get a decent one without having it refaced.

The main reason to drop down from a 8 to a 7 is that you are having trouble controlling intonation after playing on it for a few hours (fatigue). A secondary reason would be you just prefer the sound/feel of a slightly harder reed.

If you pair the 8 with a softer reed, you should have good low note response without loosing resitance needed to play high notes loudly. If not, then there may be issues with the facing curve length and/or irregularities in the facing curve (bumps, flats, uneven left/right).

Sounds to me like you know what you are doing and that the tip opening is just too big for you.

I like my Runyon Spoiler metal #7. I use it w.out the spoiler and w/a Med BARI* reed. Sometimes I wish it were more open though! But it works for me 99% of the time, so I'm not going to mess with what works :) .
